I am a PC engineer and now have 4 customers with the same problem. They all have an ADSL connection and can use Email (OE) and MSN but they cannot access web pages correctly. Google will display OK and you can search BUT you cannot then click on the search results - the page just hangs. 3 of them are using Windows ME with USB modem, the other XP with router. All were working fine until about 10 days ago. They have all contacted Orange Support to be told there is no problem. I have checked settings against those published by Orange and all seem OK. I have changed DNS to their suggested alternatives - all to no avail.
As a PC engineer, you really need to go into more detail about the symptoms and what you've tried so far.
E.g. Are all 4 running the same security software? Can you provide some urls which don't work. Is it only an issue with links? Have you tried other browsers? Have you tried your PC on their line? How about virus/spyware scans and windows updates? Have you tried tweaking TCP settings?

All running different security s/w - one not rinning any at all!
Have tried 1 of their PCs on my BT Internet line in the workshop and it works just fine - can access all web pages.
Will try one of my PCs on their line next week - using XP though. Will also try accessing sites using IP address.
Haven't tweaked TCP settings - just checked what I can find on Orange support site - seem OK. Any ideas / thoughts in this area would be appreciated
Want re-emphasise that all PCs were working fine until around 10 days ago - no changes to either the PCs or line speeds
I have a similar problem with a friend of mines connection. Running XP with a router.
The router is saying it is connected but i can not access any webpages. This problem started out of nowhere over the new year.

Orange say there is not a problem from their end
Have you managed to resolve this yet?
No - not resolved as yet. I have been trying different things over the last few days and can report the following.......
1. One of the PCs that is affected by this problem does work on another line connected to Orange on another exchange. (Original exchange is Seaton Delaval - works on Wallsend)
2. My XP machine works on one of the affected lines. I've only tested one.
3. On web pages that do not display it does not matter if you enter a URL or IP address - either fails.
4. There are some URLs that work on all affected lines - most seem to be North East located as are the lines in question.
5. URLs that do not work include
bbc.co.uk
orange.co.uk
nepcs.co.uk
6. URLs that do work include
google.co.uk
newcastleairport.co.uk
nhsjobs.co.uk
northtynesidetoday.co.uk
7. Affected local exchanges are
Seaton Delaval
Whitley Bay
Killingworth
parent exchange is thought to be Hadrian TSC (Newcastle upon Tyne)
The XP system you tested with, does it happen to use a proxy server or set DNS servers? If not then that would point to some PC issue.
If possible try using Firefox as a test, shouldn't really make a difference but at least would rule out IE being at fault. Or you could try with another program and see if it can access URL's or IP's that currently don't work.
Otherwise it sounds like some sort of exchange problem. I recall of hearing something similar before but never really found out what happened, just seemed to go away.
can you supply a tracerote of the sites that pose a problem? Note: to do this youĺl have to disable the firewall in the livebox security config pages.
I Think the window$ command is tracert [then type domain or IP]
For example, tracerouteing bbc.co.uk from my connection gives:
Code:
debian:~# traceroute bbc.co.uk
traceroute to bbc.co.uk (212.58.224.131), 30 hops max, 52 byte packets

this will give you information regarding the faulty server - look for bad pings or unreachable servers.
This can then be queried with a simple whois lookup to find out who owns the offending server - for example if i had a sh1t ping from 212.58.239.89 in my example above, i would then query the whois server to find out the contact details for the appropriate person to shout at...
Code:
debian:~# whois 212.58.239.89

Unfortunately, windows isnt blessed with a native whois command - mostly because itś a cr@p, buggy, expensive excuse for an operating system but you can download one or use an online whois service.
NB, I deleted the telephone numbers above to protect the innocent
My mother is suffering from exactly the same problem on her Orange broadband connection. She is based in Cardiff - so obviously a different exchange area.
She is also using a Speedtouch ADSL modem on Windows ME. However, it all worked perfectly for many months before the problem started. I will Be Broadband next weekend, so I will take my XP lap-top with me and see if the same problem occurs. (I will let you know what happens).
In the meantime, here are some details that might help.
I can connect to my mother's PC using VNC, so I have seen for myself how it behaves.
As with the original post, Google is fine. An example of a URL that does not work is http://www.ebu.co.uk
I have ping'd non-working sites and found that they resolve to the correct IP addresses (so it's not a DNS problem). I have tried accessing the sites by IP address and that gives the same results as entering the name-based URL.
I have installed Firefox on her PC, but that gave the same results - so it's not a specific browser problem.
E-mail (both send and receive) is working fine. (That's how I managed to get the Firefox install onto her PC - by e-mailing it to her - because the download web page just wouldn't load).
At some stage my mother got an e-mail from Orange about some service outages while they upgraded equipment. I wonder whether this was the installation of LLU at her exchange. She's not sure, but she believes the problems started at around the same time.
I started another thread about my mother's problem before I discovered this one. If the site admin wants to terminate my thread - that would be fine. I just want to know how to solve this because the mystery of it is driving me crazy and, having been in the IT industry for nearly 30 years, I thought I knew my way around computers.
