We've had an ongoing problem for 3 weeks now, and last night made a rather bizarre discovery.
Our BB disconnected overnight 3 weeks ago, and has been down ever since. After going through the rigmarole with technical support, who have to be the most USELESS call centre I have ever dealt with (and I've worked in many, even for Orange at one point!), we were told there was a fault on our line, and that it would be passed to BT wholesale. After a week, we call again and demand that this is escalated further, to be told it has been passed to the "specialist team" who are not customer facing and we cannot speak to them. First line support cannot give us any information at all about precisely what is wrong with our line, or indeed when we can expect it to be fixed, nor can they give us the number of anyone who can.
After around 18 days we ring up for our daily update (which isn't an update at all, every single day they tell us the same thing) and spend an hour on the phone with a superviser from the Indian call centre. He gives us the same information we've had a dozen times, but as a last ditch attempt to get us off the phone, tells us that he will be sending us a regular USB modem, as the Livebox is a "high demand device" and that could be the problem. We intially think this is crap, since BT have confimed we have a faulty line, but are so frustrated at this point, we just agree and hang up.
Saturday morning the USB modem arrives, and we install it on my laptop, as the main PC in the house runs XP64 and there are no compatible drivers. Low and behold, it connects. We are amazed, and wonder if the line has been fixed overnight. To check, we disconnect the modem and switch on the livebox, which actually connects too! We naturally assume that the fault has been fixed and unplug the USB modem and go back to our regular set up.
Monday morning we awake to find no internet again, and the livebox giving us the same error. We shout a lot at Orange, thinking the problem has reoccured. They raise yet another fault job with BT wholesale. Tuesday my boyfriend has the bright idea of trying the USB modem again, and once again it works, and once again, we unplug it, and the Livebox works. The same exact thing happened overnight tonight too, our Livebox disconnects, refuses to reconnect until we plug in the USB modem, "dial up" to Orange using that, and then disconnect it and connect the Livebox, which immediately starts to work. Its almost as if our Livebox needs a "jump start" from the USB modem, and then runs fine for a while on its own.
We actually inherited Orange through freeserve>wanadoo, and have used a netgear wireless router for 2 years with no problems. We decided to change our package to qualify for free phonecalls, and switched then to the Livebox, which has caused nothing but hassle. We'll be going back to the Netgear, and telling Orange where to shove their useless piece of kit, along with their 12 month contract.
I've found the same thing! PPP server down, hook up USB modem, connect, plug Livebox back in - PPP server fixed!! Done this twice and could not really believe it was the USB, just a coincidence. Now I've read your post I know it's not.
For some odd reason on my system tho, the USB modem hangs the whole system after a few seconds of being connected (never used to). Tried latest Speedtouch drivers but still the same. Not worried about it tho 'cause it has this magic effect of fixing PPP server down.
