Due to the number of problems that i was having {no change there then !}with my account i was recently "given" a price reduction and a free upgrade to a live box ! my previous connection was via a speedtouch 330 USB modem {When it was working}.I have got it connected via ethernet cable to the pc and as i do not need the wireless connection option have disabled that option via its configuration settings.Being on a 2 gb restricted download package i have always used Net meter to monitor my usage and now find that this has increased greatly since switching to the router. Even when i do not have a web page open etc there is a constant stream of both upload and download traffic which shows on both the router {flashing light} the netmeter ,the local area connection status window and the internet gateway window. The only way to stop this is to disconnect from the internet.Having Had no experience of routers before is this normal ? if it is i will soon use up my limit of 2 gb as i am now using approx 3 times what i was via the usb modem !.I am VERY security aware and have run all checks etc and found no problems.
Orange tell you that for the first 10 days after installation the livebox is "tested" to make sure that it optimizes your lines capabilities ,could this maybe what is using the "extra" as i only connected it a few days ago? Or is it just indicative of the live box and a way of getting you to upgrade to the unlimited package ?Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks.

That will monitor all traffic no matter if it's not actually coming or going through the connection itself and is just going to the livebox. Hard to say whats going on, what sort of traffic speeds are you getting when not using the connection?

You should only really have the livebox if you are on the unlimited package, they don't send them out for other ones normally. Also the 10 day period isn't specific to the livebox, it is specific to ADSL Max which would sounds right for being moved onto unlimited. You could go into the member center and see what package you're listed as being on as if on unlimited then the usage should be much of a problem. I don't imagine after sticking to 2 gig you'll go over 50 gig without a bit of effort.
Hi And Many Thanks for your reply !
The arrow light {traffic} ONLY flashes when i am actually connected to the internet . If i am not connected to the net, either because my pc is turned of or i have disconnected my network connection it remains off. The package i am on is a "special" one that they put me on to keep me with them for a while longer i think due to all the problems that i have had. It is Wireless and Talk {Via Livebox} max speed attainable for the line BUT with a 2 gb "download Guidance" limit at a price less than the Broadband starter package.
Having checked my line stats via Inventel this morning they have changed since yesterday { Downwards of course !} so i am thinking that that the constant steady usage may in fact be the line being constantly monitored in order to asses the lines true capabilities for the exchange which is adsl max with no LLU i am very pleased to say !!!!
Would be very interested to know if anybody else has experienced this constant traffic following a recent livebox installation or have i got something wrong with the box OR my set up connections?, Many thanks again for your input.
Hi Again
Just thought that it may be helpful to post that i have now solved the problem.I was connected via "Internet Gateway" which was giving the problems and using the extra data trafic.I have now disabled this and all seems to be ok........ For now !!!
The Internet Gateway is just a UPnP system, any data that was using should have been between the PC and Livebox only. The arrow light doesn't indicate internet traffic, just data passing through the livebox even if it doesn't go anywhere.
Thanks for the info.Glad to hear that the "data" did not go anywhere as i was a bit concerned that i might have had some sort of security issues. Taking on board what you said it would also mean that my "net meter" readings were not in fact correct as a lot of the data that it was showing would have not been actual "transmitted" data and therefore not count towards my 2 gig allowance? Many thanks for your help and input.
All I can say is it probably wasn't going online and counting to your usage. There's always the possibility of a program slipping by and using your bandwidth. Right now it's probably best to sit back and just see how things go.
I found the same thing with netmeter. Netmeter worked fine with the USB modem but appears to monitor all network traffic rather than just internet. Google 'NetLimiter' as an alternative monitor. Since I moved to unlimited keeping an eye on usage became less important to me.
Yeah it monitors the whole connection, so any pc to livebox only or back communication is counted as the software can't seperate it from internet traffic.
