If you got the same IP Profile then you may be stuck at that speed for upto 3 days as the system to automatically send it back up should do so if it was a simple one off bad connection.
Since upgrading to the upto 8Mb service in October I have had a good 2Mb connection, (speed tests giving about 1.8Mb). However this weekend it slowed right down.
Various speed tests yesterday quoted 0.3Mb to 0.5Mb and earlier tonight they were quoting a very slow 0.1Mb.
But in the last hour it seems to have returned to normal with figures back up at 1.8Mb.
I know I'm on ordinary ADSL as my exchange is not LLU, so why the drop in speed ?
Also why am I on ADSL when other users of the same exchange are on ADSLmax with other ISP's getting speeds of up to 6.5MB ? How do I get ADSLmax ?

There should be an upgrade option within the member center though it would start a new 12 month period of the contract.
The member centre still says that I am on the fastest speed for my line at 2Mb.
I took out a new 12 month contract back in October, joining the up to 8Mb service which was faster than the 1mb I was on at the time, (it was also the same price). This new service claims to give free upgrades when they become available.
So why are friends using the same exchange, living only a few hundred yards away on ADSLmax when I am on ordinary ADSL, with what looks like a fixed 2Mb connection ?

The only difference is the ISP.
Your friends aren't using the same line as you which is the biggest difference. Though it's hard to know how much the line is effecting things without the stats. If you're using the livebox go into it's system information page and copy out the noise margin, attenuation, attainable, upstream and downstream values. That'll help us with the speed it can take.
Also how do you know it's not LLU? Unless Orange have confirmed it, or your upload speed is over 288kbps then it's possible you are. Often sites like Samknows, though good, don't have upto date info on LLU availability.

I wonder how Orange could possibly confuse other ISP's when Orange have no idea what they are doing themselves or have a clue how to solve their own problems lol

Orange don't appar to of even heard of adsl max, i've asked loads of times why they have gone back on their word of a free upgrade when our exchange could support 8mb (what we was told by wanadoo), i knew soon as Orange took over that things would change. Think it's end of month i can get rid of this p@ss poor service! If you can leave Orange, do it now is what i say!
