Cohiba 3887 rev0, to be exact. That's what pops up every time I plug in my Inventel USB 2.0 Wireless adpater to access the internet from the Orange (Wanadoo branded) Livebox. Allow me to flesh out the situation a little more:
I've been using my Inventel Wireless Adapter since we got our Livebox and it's been reasonably fine. The 2 computers we have hooked up to the Livebox were mine (with the wireless adapter) and another PC via ethernet cable.
However, I've recently reinstalled my computer's OS and formatted everything. It's been running much smoother, I'm glad to say, than it did before, but now I can't seem to gain access to the internet using the same wireless adapter. Instead, whenever I plug the adapter in, it pops up with the message "Cohiba 2887 rev0", which I'm aware has something to do with the make of the adapter or chipset or something.
Here's the kicker, though. When I insert the Wanadoo Livebox installation CD into my PC, the setup screen will pop up, but the buttons do not work. In fact, the only button that works is the exit button in the top right, and that doesn't even close the installation properly: it just closes the window and leaves the process 'install.exe' running in the background, which can be seen with task manager. I have read various comments and whatnot about this issue and I've found nothing that's helped me in any way.
Before you say ignore the CD and setup the connection through Windows, I've tried. And failed. My PC doesn't even see the adapter as a wireless device at all and therefore I can't access the wireless network setup. This, I'm guessing, is down to the fact the drivers for the adapter (from the CD) aren't installed. If someone could point out to me how to get the drivers off the CD and onto my PC correctly, I think that would work. Or maybe there's a way to install without having to go through the flash GUI, or just fix the thing once and for all.
What's worrying is the fact that I've tried out different programs and utilities that were supposed to help sort out the problem in some sort of way (effectively, get the device working without the need to install the drivers or something), but none of them have worked. And when I say not worked, I mean they haven't shown any signs of any activity, other than leaving a process running in the background of some sort, doing bacially nothing.
The OS I've installed is Windows XP Pro (SP2) with all updates up to January 2007 installed. This problem with the programs not seeming to do anything seems vaguely familiar to me, as if I've encountered it before a long time ago. I'm hoping there's a fix or something like that someone could direct me to, I'd be very grateful.
NB: One thing I've noticed is that in the Network Connections, there's only one connection showing up, which corresponds to the PCI ethernet connection, and this has always shown up (on my previous OS too, XP Home) but another connection that showed up before I formatted my PC was called 1394 and I think it was a LAN or something. This may have come along with the wireless connection, after I installed it (meaning 2 connections showed up in the network connections, as well as the PCI one).
I've exausted my knowledge of networking and these stupid programs that won't properly open, so if anyone can offer anything that might help, I'd be hugely grateful. Thanks very much in advance.
You need to update the drivers for the adapter. The CD is the easiest method and you should be able to get it running if you remove the Flash 9 player on the system. Alternatively Orange have an article specifically on this problem that'll show you through the full process.
