Hello Pip, I too am in the exact same boat as you- as well as a few others. It'll be interesting to know what exchange you connect to, I am at the Vauxhall exchange. This whole issue is very frustrating.
See there wouldn't be a problem if they would say "At this point in time, Orange can only offer you the fastest speed of 1/2 meg, would you be satisfied with that", when someone is ordering the Up to 8 meg package. But no, they do not disclose this info (you have to ask for it)- and you sign up to a service which is not acceptable in this day and age. B@stards. Whats even more worse is that other ISPs from the EXACT same exchange WILL provide with a faster service.
I'm giving them about a month or so (I envy you palace- you were able to jump ship) because they mentioned the possibility of the exchange equipment being upgraded (Not holding my breath) in a few months. After that I'm making official complaints. Orange don't even have the curtosy of offering a discount on the subscription due to this problem.
They maketh me seeth....really seeth...*deep breath*
As Hamlet says "I could a tale unfold whose lightest word would harrow up thy soul, freeze thy young blood. Make thy two eyes, like stars, start from their spheres......"
I can't seem to find Hamlet on this forum. Yo need to tell him to stay on topic!!!!!!
Broadband Speed – ISP’s selling up to 8megs to Home Users.
Is there any evidence that any home user in the United Kingdom has ever attained a full speed of 8 megabytes from any Internet Service Provider?
It's megabits, not bytes but it's very easy to confuse the two.
8 megabits = 1 megabyte
You bet its confusing no wonder Orange are able bamboozle most of us with using the mega word to mean whatever you want it to mean.

As Glenhill said most you'll get is 7mb, 7.15 technically but with overheads it usually comes out at 7.

If there is, could we be given the evidence and have it fully authenticated?
Most of my research indicates that not one single ISP can offer that speed realistically or honestly.
Try looking at...
http://www.dslzoneuk.net/speed...test.php
The table titled Todays best 8mb sync results, the results column there shows the actual speed results for the connections, close to the 7mb we've mentioned.

Therefore no individual can say that switching between one ISP and another will make any difference to achieving the claim of up to 8 megabytes. This can only lead to endless frustration at this continuous misleading selling. It also makes it very difficult to resolve this problem as an individual consumer.
Pip
When i was with the farce that is Orange my speeds although being on up to 8 meg was only getting average 2.5 meg it never went over that Orange just wasn't interested and seeings im 70 metres from my exchange directly opposite me i found strange i changed ISP's and now get between 6 and 6.5 megs which is more the norm for an adslmax connection if your out of contract do the same i learnt the hard way too you get what u pay for in this game and if you have problems with Orange the support is just non existent.
