I don't know XBL but this could be a port issue. If it's waiting expecting an incoming connection for a game without making an outgoing one then the livebox (or a lot of routers) will just block the unexpected connection.
I noticed while playing any of the following:
Halo 2
Rainbow 6 (any of the sequal things)
Farcry instincts &/or evolution
That i cant connect to a game hosted by anyone using BT broadband, nor can they connect to a game i am hosting...
Anyone else had this problem? it usually says "this game is not available"

I am having very similar problems. Did you find a solution? I can connect to other games but when i try to connect to one my friend is hosting ( he is with BT internet) i can not connect to his game and vice versa.
The port forwarding works both ways so anyone behind a router may need to set it up so connections are allowed through correctly. It's usually the game host that needs to setup the forwarding so it all works properly.
