From what I've heard if LLU is available thats what gets put on otherwise it's ADSL Max unless that too is unavailable in that area.
The main reason they're going for Max at the moment is simply availability, they can use it in the non-LLU areas to attract/keep customers by being able to offer them what other ISPs are offering.
Presumably its not financially viable to unbundle small exchanges (mine is only ~1200 chimney pots) so the only way we are going to get faster speeds is thru ADSL Max?

Probably the case, if you check most of the LLU operators they usually only cover smaller more urban areas where the benefits outweigh the costs of them doing so.
Have Orange abandoned LLu now for ADSL Max? Or are they using ADSL Max in the interim until they LLU?
I don't understand why they are charging £20 to ge tit now but can have free in the near future. I joined the Max package to get the advertised 8mb speed, I don't see why anyone should have to pay for what they advertised anyway.
There's people trialling it now, and the upgrade process for everyone else starts November. They can't do everyone at once so they've set a schedule which their migration systems and support can cope with. The fee is simply a way of preventing everyone asking to upgrade at once, plus BT wouldn't be too happy trying to upgrade a couple hundred thousand lines to Max over the course of a couple of weeks.
Would you prefer no option to upgrade now at all and having to wait until whatever point they've assigned to upgrade you?
I think it is false advertising as Orange use the 8mb spped in their adverts to get customers.
I joined Orange for that reason and the line check said i could get this speed. When I signed up no adviser said I would only be getting 2mb for the forseeable future. I think we are only asking for what has been adsvertised. it would be nice to be even given an idea when the upgrade will happen?
AFAIK LLU isn't going to be scrapped but with the slow introduction and that it isn't likely to be everywhere Orange can provide the faster speeds through ADSL Max without the costs of upgrading the exchange themselves. As with most things it comes down to money.
It would be hard to get them on false advertising for the 8 meg as pretty much since the beginning it's always been referred to as "upto 8 meg". Pushing the availability angle would be a better option but when you signup it advises what speed should be available and they do have a page on their site giving projected LLU exchange upgrades.
I understand that but it is very misleading as when i checked my available speed it said 6-8mb, so a fair assumption to think i would bet 8mb. I know the word' upto' is always used as a safety net by isp's.
I just think it's a bit rich for Orange to ask for £20 to upgrade now to send anengineer to my exchange when I had no wireless 7 talk for over 3 weeks and although I am on the Max package i am still being billed for free phone calls and having to claim refunds each month.
I understand that ISP's use the catch all of 'upto' but it is very msileading and whn i did a speed check it said my line would support 6-8mb. So, a fair assumption to think i would get this speed.
I think Orange should be able to tell you when the upgrade will happen and not charge £20 for an engineer to go to my exchange to do it now.
I think it's a bit rich when i didn't have wireless & talk for 3 mnoths and although on the Max package I keep getting nilled for calls i have to keep chasing for refunds for.
