Earlier this year I received an e-mail from Orange stating that they were making improvements to my Broadband package. All has been well since April with the connection speed being a steady 8.1Mbps. Over the last two weeks however this has began to drop. Last week it dropped to 7.6Mbps which didn't bother me too much. Yesterday it was 7.5Mbps. What began to concern me was when it suddenly dropped again to 7.0Mbps. Is the connection speed being squeezed or is there any logical reason for this? I have ran a couple of speed tests resulting in a download speed of 3400Kbps Upload speed 375Kbps. I still use a Thompson speedtouch 330 modem. My exchange is Forres (01309) Not sure if any work there is causing the connection speed to drop.
I'm not sure what 0range meant by "improvements", I think Forres exchange has never had 0range LLU so you would have been on their bought-in up to 8meg BT IPStream product anyway.
Forres isn't due to be WBC upgraded until the end of this year so I don't know what "improvements" that they could make
Run this test : www.speedtester.BT.com and post back the result together with the router's stats.
It sounds to me like there's a line/exchange fault
The speedtester results are: Download 3271Kbps
DSL Connection Rate 6880Kbps downstream
448Kbps Upstream
IP Profile 6000Kbps
Looked in the speedtouch USB diagnostics window cannot access the required router stats for some reason. On logging on again tonight taskbar showed speed had dropped again to 6.8Mbps. Found a spare speedtouch 330 modem so swapped over. Back to 6.9Mbps. Hmm.
Master phone is connected via filter and Sky digi box plug. PC in other room plugged into BT socket extension via filter. Telephone extension is in same room but only plugged into 3 pin socket. Not near the computer.
First try replacing all the filters and the cable between phone socket and router then check the speed using www.speedtest.net.
If this doesn't work then try unplugging the Sk y box from the phone line then check the speed. Sk y boxes are notorious for creating broadband interference.
If speed has increased then try double filtering the Sk y box (2 filters in series with the Sk y box plugged into the 2nd filter).
If speed doesn't increase then unplug ALL telephony items, so just the router is connected, then check the speed again.
If speed increases then add back main phone, check speed again and keep adding back each item until the speed drops again.
If the speed still doesn't increase then the problem may well be the router.
Hello Borednow. Thanks for the advice. I have tried a couple of spare speedtouch modems and new filters along with another RJ11 cable. Done what you suggested but it looks like its still stuck on a connection speed of either 6.9 or 7.0Mbps. I contacted the call centre and the lady I spoke to suggested it was a fault with my router ie it's age, not convinced with that. She said something which I knew, that if I wouldn't be able to use the speedtouch modem if I upgraded to windows7. I am not changing my XP Sp3 computer yet. My mother is on the same Orange package as me and has a wireless connection (not an Orange livebox). Will look to go down this route.

Don't forget that the IPStream product download speeds are heavily dependent on the time of day, being severely affected during peak hours. I think 3-4meg is quite often all that is seen at these times. My neighbour on BT suffers badly during peak hours, as was I when I was switch from 0range LLU to BT IPStream.
