our connection has recently started playing up; it seems to take forever to actually connect when switched on - I've taken to switching on and going away to read the paper and have a cup of coffee whilst it decides to connect - or not. Rather frequently I now get the 'not responding' window when attempting to connect; it also does it at intervals whenever it feels like it. It also seems to 'drop' the connection for no reason.
Could some bright spark tell me if this is more likely to be the age of our computer and the processor about to die, or is it likely to be that the Livebox needs 'resetting' somehow.
We've had an account with Orange since freeserve days and have only stayed with them due to general inertia and it not really mattering too much; although last year with email problems I nearly lost it, but they do seem to have improved the email service - a little - since then.
Any general thoughts would be appreciated - but if anyone wants me to post speed stats or anyhting else, you'll have to tell me how to do it!!!! We do live in the back of beyond as far as telecoms are concerned - although allegedly BT have upgraded our local connection box which can't be more than a mile away, and their sales pitches assure me that if I change to them, I will find the wonder of a bright new dawn of effortless speed and general joy!
What is actually taking a long time ?....getting to the point when you can load your browser or is it once you've loaded the browser the web page is taking a long time to load.
When the connection drops, is this a wireless or an ethernet connection ?
If wireless check wireless channels in use around you with inSSIDer :
problem 1: machine takes for ever to boot up - plagued by annoying window 'server busy' etc etc which is apparentlya known problem with apparently no known fix - but which eventually goes away.
problem 2: loading the browser either seems to work at once, or it simply takes forever and tells lies - it states 'connecting' which I find hard to believe!!!
Everything connected by cables ie livebox to computer is cable; no wireless connections in house, and, although I know this is scarcely credible today - none of our neighbours have computers!!!!
Computer resident in small office, so wireless unnecessary - and I didn't want to make any more problems for myself than I had to!!!
running XP - and I am embarrassed to admit but set-up is 8 years old (sorry, I am aware it's antique, but we had no reason to upgrade and now can't afford to!)
the pop-up window 'server busy' has been here for at least 18 months - have given up trying to get it fixed; have visited all relevant sites and no-one really appears to have workable permanent fix.
The hassle with browser loading/disconnecting/'cannot display page' etc has got worse recently - say since the end of last year.
To my knowlege, there is no application - apart from 'background' - set to load automatically on start-up.
haven't run malware scan - don't know how to - but Norton seems to be permanently running 'full-systme' scans; but it always has, and the problem has become much worse recently - and we've always had Norton.
Have tended to 'live' with the problems, as not really dependent on computer for work/life in general; but we do of course need it for occasional business email and heavy wordprocessing; just becoming much more irritating.
thanks

I say this without any malice intended, it seems from what you have posted that your computer and associated technology has been neglected over several years.
Follow these instructions to see if anything improves :-
2. Click Start > My Computer > right click the Local Disk c:\drive icon > click Properties > Tools > Defragment
3. Click Start > My Computer > right click Local Disk c:\ > click Properties > General and check what Capacity shows for the Used space shown in blue. If the pink sector is less than 5Gb then you should begin planning for a hard disk upgrade or a new computer.
This may seem an extreme action, but why not restore your pc/laptop to 'factory settings' ?
That's not such an extreme action as you may think. Think of it as a "spring clean", in fact a colleague of mine does this once year and swears by it to keep his laptop running to speed.
It may seem a daunting task but once you've done it the first time it's simple.
