I've been on Orange/Wanadoo since the freeserve days. I live in the country (about 3.15km from the exchange as the crow flies, 4km by road) and we've always had terrible speeds. I recently renewed my broadband, on the 20meg package and I got to thinking, does our internet really have to be so slow? I mean we're not that far from the exchange.
So I did some research and checked my line stats:
Line mode: G.992.5 (ADSL2+)
Maximum line rate: 1021 kbps (downstream) / 606 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 14 dB (downstream) / 15 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 53 dB (downstream) / 34 dB (upstream)
Output power: 20 dBm (downstream) / 12 dBm (upstream)
Then I came across kitz.co.uk and learnt about the "ring wire", which I removed. I instantly had a bump in my SNR Margin:
Line mode: G.992.5 (ADSL2+)
Maximum line rate: 1021 kbps (downstream) / 606 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 22 dB (downstream) / 15 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 54 dB (downstream) / 34 dB (upstream)
Output power: 21 dBm (downstream) / 12 dBm (upstream)
But the maximum line rate will not budge, it's been stuck there for weeks. Everything I've read suggests that I should be able to get a better speed than that considering my attenuation and SNRM.
I spoke to Orange and they assured me that my line could only support 1.5Mbps. I said I wasn't even getting that, and they said they'd do a line test and get back to me. Of course they haven't.
Do you think Orange have placed an artificially slow rate on my line for some reason? Kitz reckons I should get 4096kbps with a throughput of 3625kbps.
You are suffering the joys of the 0range ADSL2+ DLM which runs 24/7, monitoring your connection to ensure that it doesn't disconnect.
What it doesn't do is ensure that you get the fastest connection speed possible.
With a SNR of 22dB you will never connect at more than the current sync.
Be patient or if you're unable to be patient then ask for a MAC code as it's likely to be a long wait before the DLM drops the SNR down to the 10dB default setting which will allow an increase in the connection speed.
hi,i was having slow issues for about a week, and was about to give up,after switching off the router for a few seconds and then back on it works fine.
Well unfortunately I've had slow issues for many years! Only just decided to see what I could do about it after getting told by BBC iPlayer that my connection is too slow (for the 100th time!) I always assumed that because I live out in the sticks I'd always get slow speeds.
Having done my research and checked my line stats it appears I'm being ripped off by Orange. My router has been turned off and on again several times in the last few months, and no change.
Just an update, I managed to speak to someone at Orange's fault management dept. (someone in the UK, would you believe it?) who said that I was indeed on a 1meg profile, even though my line can support more. He said he'd put in a request to have the profile raised, so fingers crossed.

From the sounds of that, Orange might put you on a higher profile. How can they say 'yay' or 'nay' when, as you say, the line is more than capable of an increased profile?
Well, Orange have evidently changed my profile, I'm now synced at 2700Kbps, and I got around 2.30Mbps on the speedtest. A great improvement, and I can actually watch Youtube videos without having to wait an age now.
I pretty happy wit this result - I was never going to be able to get ultra-high speeds, but things seem acceptable for now.
