If anyone's following my progress of escaping from the Orange beast, here's the latest.
After requesting cancellation of my connection yesterday, I decided to ring BT this afternoon to see if the request had been made to remove their marker from my line.
To my surprise, it has been, and BT tell me it should be completed by Sept 11th. Not bad, that would only be the 5th working day after my request and I was told 10.
Orange have finally done something right! They've actually gone up in my estimation!
So hopefully I can place my order with Sky next Monday - a whole week earlier than I was expecting!
I was told that it would probably only take 5 days to clear the line - was on holiday when it was done but it seemed to go through quite quickly - cancellation of account was instant, but I think that was so they could tell me that they couldn't provide a MAC for me to move, not that it would have made any difference. Am still waiting for promised pouch to return (brand new, replacement) Livebox, six weeks after cancellation and after approximately five requests both written and verbal - will not chase up any more as I have told them it is waiting for them to do something - posted a copy of my last letter about it on this forum as evidence if necessary.
Good luck with your move!
Just in case anyone else wants to know, I contacted BT by calling 151.
If you speak to their broadband people they should be able to tell you when your marker is due to be removed. You might have to stay on hold for a while though.
If your exchange is LLUed you get an LLU MAC code the only difference from the other MACs is that it takes 10 days to complete the migration but no downtime then you dont have to pay an activation charge to ur new provider i got one from Orange, but some call centres make it as awkward as possible to obtain one some saying they dont provide em anymore which is total rubbish. Also some providers wont accept an LLU MAC but theres quiet a few that do, sadly Orange have taken to giving some customers invalid MACs which is shameful.

Steve
Orange no longer provide LLU MAC codes. This is because at present virtually no providers accept them, and issuing them was creating more problems for the vast majority of customers than they would have had by just closing their account in the first place.
You state that "Orange have taken to giving some customers invalid MACs." They're not invalid MACs but just pointless LLU ones, because hardly anyone accepts them hence why they've stopped issuing them. Bulldog are the only one that I've come across that were able to take them.
Well, I'm still waiting for my marker to be removed. It is still scheduled for Monday, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Funny thing happened yesterday - I received an email from Orange advising me of my VOIP phone number! That was good of them - Three days after I had cancelled my service!
Their incompetence astounds me.
Monday will be an exciting day. Seeing if my marker is removed and also the 11th is my billing day! Even though I'm supposed to be on my two free months, it'll be interesting to see if they try to collect my payment. I'll go mental if they do!!!
Have a nice weekend. No internet until I get to work on Monday now!

Zen also take LLU MACs, and I know folks who have tried to migrate to Zen but got handed "invalid" LLU MACs from Orange.

Hi
My statement is fact, They are invalid MACs there is one person on here thats had 3 invalid MACs in a row and there is a few ISP's that take LLU MACs cos i got one off Orange and migrated to IDNet with one, i asked them if they accepted them they said yes so i requested one from Orange so hardly pointless,

This seems to have turned into a debate on LLU MACs!
However, back to my original topic for anyone that's still interested. I checked the livebox this morning before leaving for work and it was still showing PPP Server down. I wasn't really expecting the marker to be removed so early in the morning. When I got in at lunchtime though the status had changed. The light was now flashing rapidly and the status said No Link or Link Down or something like that.
So anyway, I'm just off the phone with Sky having been able to place my order. I should get my router on Saturday. I'm now just waiting for the letter from Sky to tell me my activation date, but I'm guessing I'll be able to get that from BT's website tomorrow, if Sky actually place the order today.
I'll keep you posted with the progress of getting online with Sky for the benefit of anyone else planning to jump ship and move to Sky.
Congratulations Andrew LOL
Hope ut transfer goes ok

Good Luck with Sky, I hope as Sky are 'starting out' , they are looking to impress... might be a good investment.
On the Subject of MACs - yeah I've had 3 duds form Orange, they claim the reason they don't work is BT's as BT only recognise LLU Macs from Wannadoo (they haven't updated their systems supposedly).. then why have people like Steve been migrated ok? I think is is another pathetic delaying tactic.
The other thing is, by cancelling, and getting marker removed, there is a potential cost in signing up to a new provider, so having already paid to get phone line activated in the first place and only having to cancel due to Orange's incompetance, Orange must be held liable for this cost.

Ex-Orange customer (I can actually say that now!)
You're not the only one mate, my line went clear today as well..
I signed up with Zen and my activation date is next monday.
Still aint heard nothing from Orange about their crap livebox though..
if they want it then they can phone me as I'm not wasting another penny on them crooks!
Well, as I said, I placed my order with Sky Broadband on the 11th and my connection was activated today.
From cease request with Orange to Sky activation was 16 days (including two weekends), so it wasn't too painful in the end (I was expecting it to be a month).
How stable Sky's service is remains to be seen, but it certainly can't be worse than the service from Orange.
I'm connected at about 5mb down and 0.7 up from my speedtest earlier today. This compares with about 2mb down and 0.2 up which I had for about a week from Orange before it died.
If you have problems with Orange - don't hesitate - dump them! I did and it feels great!
If you're worried about losing a long established email address - don't worry. I can still download emails using Outlook Express even though I'm on Sky now (I didn't think I would be able to). I haven't tried sending, but I don't use that address anyway. I will check in case anyone else wants to know.
Just an update to my last comment which I forgot to mention.
Although I can still receive mail, I can no longer send from my old freeserve address using Outlook Express. Not that I'm bothered as I migrated to a hotmail address a year ago due to the amount of spam I was getting.
I can still still send if I log in to the website though.
