I have Orange broadband and a wireless laptop.

At home I can send emails via smtp.orangehome.co.uk successfully

When I visit a friend who is on some other ISP, it won't connect to the orangehome smtp server so I can;t send emails.

Is there some way of setting authentication on the smtp connection to get around this - if so what are the settings?

BTW: The email address is actually a freeserve one. Orange support said use smtp.freeserve.co.uk but that doesn't seem to work either!

To send from another ISP's connection you need to change the SMTP server settings to that ISP's.

Eg. smtp.ispname.co.uk ..... it may not be this format so you need to check.

You may also need to change the port number for that server.

Using 0range webmail will save making these changes though.

Thank you yes. I did realise that. But changing the settings every time you go to a different wifi hotspot is not easy.

Some providers allow authenticated access to their smtp servers so that it can work from anywhere. Do Orange do that perhaps?

I'm pretty sure they do, although i'm not sure the config settings are published. Try changing incoming/outgoing server settings to the standard SSL ports and see if that works.

I tried all of that.

Then I found that port 25 is blocked for access from non-orange networks. So is port 465.

Then I realised I could configure outgoing smtp via the msn/hotmail server which does allow authenticated access and that solved the problem. Well avoided it at least.

Port 587 should not be blocked, give that one a go.
