I was chuffed as nuts that I got my Livebox working quickly with my MAC. But then discovered that if I put my MAC (iMac, OS 10.5. to sleep and wake it, the Livebox needs rebooting before I can connect. In fact if my MAC is put to sleep, my ipod touch can no longer connect either. Please tell me I'm doing something stupid and it's easy to fix!
This issue (and some others) resolved with a firmware update, that you can access from the admin panel which on my livebox is http://192.168.1.1/ in a browser.

I have this very same problem - when waking the MAC from sleep (and sometimes when I switch on or reboot too) I get the following showing in System Preferences - Network - Ethernet.
'Ethernet has a self assigned IP address and may not be able to connect'
It appears that the IP address has just randomly changed....Clicking on the lock on the Preferences screen to try to preserve the correct settings when I am connected doesn't do the trick.......
Sorry to ask butI should be so grateful if you/ the OP could let me know whether the suggested fix worked and 'talk' me through how to do it - I'm frankly terrified to mess with this, but its driving me bonkers!!
Hopefully, this will resolve it for you, but your problem doesn't sound exactly the same as mine. I made a screen video and put it here http://homepage.mac.com/realst...update.mov
This is how I did a firmware update (which is basically a way of updating the software in the livebox).
If you are still having trouble, please post again.
Thanks very much for this - I checked but result was that the firmware was up to date.
I have changed the network settings so that configuration is 'Using DHCP with manual address' and I entered the IP address which works when I do connect.
This generally (but not always) gets me connected when I boot up. However, if I leave the MAC for a period of time and then fire up Safari I get a message that internet page cannot be displayed because I am not connected to the internet - but when I check in System Preferences Network settings it shows the Ethernet connection is connected! If I then pull out the ethernet cable and then plug it back in I can then usually get to internet sites......... but this is obviously far from satisfactory.
If you or anyone else have any suggestions I should be so grateful!
Right, tried this without success: left MAC unattended for an hour and when I woke it up, duly got the message that Safari could not open the webpage because the computer was not connected to the internet (even though Network Preferences showed that Ethernet was connected) - grr!
Please, please are there any happy MAC users out there who have solved this problem?

In Windows you can set the o/s to switch off functions when they're not in use , like USB hubs and network cards. Do you have any such facility on a MAC?
I'm a MAC novice so I'm afraid I don't know, but its not something I'm aware of. I haven't got a usb hub or a separate network card connected. Any other suggestions or help gratefully received .....
I'm also going to try posting in the MAC forum here, setting out everything I've tried so far in the hope that someone whose MAC is behaving can tell me what I'm doing wrong!!
