Had you done speedtests previously that actually got anywhere near the 2meg rate and now you're seeing a dropoff?
The ping you get of 36ms is pretty good. You could try a different server like Milton Keynes and Paris as the servers can give some varying results.
To be honest with a download speed of approx 1meg you must be connecting (syncing) at 1.4meg or thereabouts anyway I'd have thought.
It would be useful to go to this site http://www.samknows.com/broadb.../index.php and take the exchange mapping option , might give you some clues as to how far from the exchange you are and potential speeds.
Done the Exchange mapping option and it says
ADSL available at ~3.5Mbps
ADSL2+ is not available
Cable services not available
Never Achieved anything higher than the tests I am currently doing as well.
Line Attenuation
Downstream - 60.0 db
Upstream - 31.5 db
Noise Margin
Downstream - 17.7 db
Upstream - 24.0 db
You're on a fixed 1Mb connection because of the distance you are from the local exchange.
If you bought the extension cable from a DIY outlet and it's the flat type then you could improve the phone cable from socket to router by using "CW1308 twisted pair"cable.

Based on your downstream attentuation you're 4.3km from the exchange and the most you can possibly sync at is 2000kbps , ie you'd be on a 2meg IP profile. You could try contacting Orange and asking them what profile you are currently on and if it's not 2meg try to get them to change it. Actually it's BT that'll have to change it as you'll be using a BT IP Stream service (think that's what it's called), but Orange have to talk to BT.
Edit: I was writing this as Borednow posted & I'd bow to his greater knowledge but you might get as result doing as I suggested.

The CW1308 cable could eliminate any instability that MAY have given BT reason to put MykiiD onto the fixed 1Mb connection. So certainly contact with Orange is necessary......whether MykiiD will get any sensible answers is another thing

Cheers for all the help guys.
But confused about this cable stuff.
Any help with this?
Also is it cool for a router to be working without being wired to a computer via ethernet.

The router makes the connection to the internet regardless of whether any PCs are connected providing the link is set to always on/continuous rather than on-demand or manual.

Fantastic. Thankyou very much for that.

Is this the kind of wire I'll need as well. If so I'll order it today and start moving the router downstairs to see if there is any boost of speed !

I havent got a short phone cable unfortunatly so even if I moved it now I would still have to buy a new cable.
And yes, I am moving the router downstairs next to the master socket. (Will now be approx. 50 cm from the master socket) So would be getting a much shorter lead than before.

Kewl. Thankyou for the advice and I'll give Orange a call once all that is sorted.
Also, is the cable I linked to the correct cable to buy (The twisted pair cable?)
