My Orange.net email account was running fine in Mail until around Februaryish, and then randomly started refusing to send any emails. I rang customer services at the time, who told me to call tech support on that 50p/min number - which I did; and all they could tell me was that their team only supported Windows users (UNFAIR!! ), and to try my ISP's own outgoing mail settings. Unbeknown to them, I had already tried this - along with numerous other settings that had been churned out in searches I'd done.
To this day, I am only able to retrieve my Orange.net email in Thunderbird and not Mail (even with the exact same settings in both); and although Thunderbird is quite a nice little application and it works just fine, I do miss the convenience of Mail's integration with Address Book and iCal. I'm aware that Orange.net email is retrievable online, but I only signed up for it because it offered free POP3 support - plus I find the online UI slow and crappy.
I'm pretty sure that this is a compatibility issue, rather than an error in the entry of my account and server data, as I've tried everything I can think of. I was wondering whether anyone knows of a resolution to these problems in OS Leopard/Mail - perhaps a patch or something. I've done a bit of searching but not found anything.
Cheers, I hadn't thought of that. It's weird that it gives you the option of setting up a POP account - I assumed it supported both. I'll have a ganders.
I finally solved it. I had a mad tinkering half hour, and I finally, FINALLY worked it out. Here are those glorious settings for Apple's 'Mail' client for anyone who was as pi**ed off as me:
Account type: POP3
Incoming server: pop.orange.net
Incoming username: your mobile number
Incoming password: your email password*
Outgoing server: smtp.orange.net
Outgoing password: your mobile number @orange.net (AHA!)
Outgoing password: same as incoming password
* Your email password is different from your online account login password. It can be found in the email account options section of your webmail ('options' in the bottom left of the screen, and then 'email account.')
Basically, they've changed the username for the outgoing server from just your phone number to your phone number @orange.net (i.e. 07777777777@orange.net) and not told anyone. Jerks. So there you have it. Works like a charm now!
the message i keep getting is that the smtp server is not available and to check the settings and details I have entered! so what would the server details be for an Orange.net address???
assuming your isp isnt blocking port 25 and is resolving the address smtp.orange.net correctly, I notice that the post you based your settings on is fairly old, there have been several changes to the authentication, though Im not sure when.
Im wondering if these are correct, is it possible to log on via the web and check these settings for your account?
Also can you receive incoming mail? is it just the outgoing mail you are having probs with?
# In the Incoming mail server: field, enter pop.orange.net
# If available, set the Account type: to POP/POP3
# Enter the username and password for the email account.
# In the Outgoing (SMTP) mail server: field, enter smtp.orange.net
# Check the Outgoing server requires authentication checkbox if necessary. (This is normally required if sending email through an email service provider).
# Ensure the Use the same user name and password for sending e-mail is checked. (This is normally required if sending email through an email service provider).
# Check the checkboxes to enable secure (SSL/TLS) e-mail if necessary. This is required for some email accounts and can be easily verified with the e-mail service provider. Press Done.
Try with the last option on and off.
If you can log in to your account via the web at Orange.co.uk, see if it lists your username + password for your e-mail settings.
