I've recently switched from Sky broadband (where i was getting 2.2mb speeds) to Orange on their 2mb/2gb package and am getting incredibly frustrated with how slow the connection is - it is worse than most dial-up connections were many years ago!
I don't expect 2mb to be superfast, but it should be ok for normal browsing and expected it to be about the same as it was with Sky - but boy have I been wrong. It's taking literally 15-20 seconds to load some pages and any videos I've looked at take ages to buffer. I can't envisage that I am anywhere near my download limit as I've just returned from 2 weeks away so have barely used it this month at all, yet the problems started as soon as I got back.
I've done a speedcheck and it is showing download speeds of 1,800-1,900 but the speed in reality is really not showing it. I can't see it being the laptop I use as it was perfectly fine with Sky and when I use it to connect wirelessly elsewhere.
Also, I am unable to plug the modem in to my exension socket (even though it is in the same room as my master and I had no problems with the Sky modem in there) and Orange have failed to be able to provide a solution for this. Is this normal? The modem at the master socket is really inconvenient...
I look forward to hearing anyones thoughts/suggestions.
These are the stats for the moment, although it appears to be working a little better than normal tonight, touch wood!!
Status: Cable connected
Line mode: G.992.5 (ADSL2+)
Maximum line rate: 2266 kbps (downstream) / 285 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 31 dB (downstream) / 4294967282 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 30 dB (downstream) / 14 dB (upstream)
Output power: 20 dBm (downstream) / 11 dBm (upstream)
Those are absolute rubbish for a 30dB attenuation line. The only data that looks anywhere near OK is the Output Power.
If you have an NTE5 main BT socket (the one with the removable lower half frontplate) plug the router into the test socket inside and take another reading of the stats.
I had no coneection at all for about 4 hours on Tuesday. "Computer not responding"...
The message box at Orange was full and I could not get through to the helpline so I would gues there was a problem. My connection seems ok now though.
