hi please help i am getting very slow download speeds 0.5 Mbps and a ping of 200ms i should be getting around 6.0Mbps. when i try and play online games i get kicked because of packet loss. the worst time is on a night it seems to be fine during the day
Looks like a classic case of contention on a BTw IPStream connection from an overstretched local exchange.
Run www.speedtester.BT.com tonight and if your IP Profile is slightly less than your sync (7072kbps) but the throughput result is way down then your connection is being throttled from around 1800h-2400h.
Not much you can do other than change to an LLU connection from a different ISP if one's available at your local exchange.
Even if you stop your night time gaming activities the speed wouldn't increase that much.....max. 100kbps perhaps.

My friends o2 (now Sky) connection is fine we both live in the same small village so i guess he uses the same exchange as me, so i contacted Orange spoke to sum one from india that didn’t have a clue. so i phoned thinking of leaving Orange helpline at last sum one who speaks and understands english i told them to fix the prob or send me my MAC, they are sending me a siemens router they said it could be a prob with your live box. This is oranges last chance, if this doesn’t fix prob i want my MAC code as this has been going on for 4 months now
the test was done @ around 9:30 pm cod4 was playing ok just be4 i did the test. when cod4 is unplayable and i do a test @ http://www.speedtest.net/ i get 0.5Mbps
just done a test 1155am today

This is a good result from a connection with no contention.
What you saw last night was a slow down of everybody's Orange connection on your local exchange. Your friend who's on o2 (now Sky) probably was not affected even though he's on the same exchange as you. Possibly neither were users who are with BT as an ISP.
The problem is that Orange have not purchased enough capacity from BTw.
thanks for your help and advise Borednow i will wait and give this new router a try when it comes and if my speed is still the same at night i will be joining o2 (now Sky)

try and do a quite line test 17070 from you corded phone if u hear noise log it as a PSTN fault if not then get urself a Openreach master socket if your on IPStream its all BT orange cant do nothin bout it other than to give u hope
i got my siemens router and it made no difference, so i asked for my MAC code they said there would be a disconnection fee as i still had 2 months left on my contract even tho i have been with freeserve, wanadoo, orange for over 10 years. so i said that Orange have broken our contract by not supplying me with a useable service 5 nights out of 7, i said i would be cancelling my direct debit and you can take me to court because Orange are breaching the sale of goods act 1982. I told them i will expect my MAC code within 5 working days after i receive my MAC code i will contact Orange again to cancel my account
I also asked to speak to a manager and none were available so i asked to be put through to the escalations dept they said the line to the escalations dept is down i would have to ring back tomorrow. I am so glad to be leaving
ps if Orange want there livebox and siemens routers back i will send them but i wont be paying the postage

Best of luck but I'll point out that they haven't breached the Sale of Goods Act, 5084kbps is a pretty good speed it's just not at the time of day that suits you; you will owe them the balance of the contract, just depends whether their debt collectors take you to court; the livebox returns envelope is prepaid.
For other ISPs for IPStream look at AAISP, FAST and IDNET, all these provide good fast connections, excellent customer service but charge more than Orange.
another quick question i have done 2 tests over the last 2 days

Why has my DSL connection rate and my IP profile changed?
could i request interleaving be removed from my line because there was a post on another forum that suggests this might solve some of my probs with high ping

The reason for the increase in sync speed and IP Profile is that there has been a "noise incident" in the last 10 - 14 days which dropped your IP Profile (and so your sync) to ensure no disconnection. Your line has now recovered from the moise problem and is now syncing at more or less maximum for an up to 8Mb connection.
If you have interleave removed (you need to ask Orange to do this) then the line may be more unstable and you may experience disconnections but you would see better latency.
Personally, I would leave it for a week or 2, monitor the stability it with BT Speedtester then decide if you want fastpath rather than interleave.
stevenb9275, your best option is to leave Orange.
They will tell you all sorts to keep you there like its the phone exchange, or phone line, etc.
Since I left Orange and went to Sky, my internet has been fine. Switch provider, and get the connection you should be having.
(For info about what will happen otherwise, see my thread by Packet Loss in this section on the forum).
Leave now and go elsewhere, Orange don't give a crap about people and will lie all the way and blame everyone else, except themselves.
i think i will end up leaving Orange i just got my MAC code and its valid for 30 days so i told Orange they have 20 days to fix it or i will be using my MAC code
update
i have now left Orange and joined o2 (now Sky) my ping is now under 50ms and my download speed is much better it still slows a little at peek times but it is much better
