Hi all, After experiencing poor and changing speeds i have decided to invest in a new router ( Netgear dgn 2000) in a hope to improve my connection! This was replacing my old BTVoyager 2100.
Unfortunatly there doesnt semem to be much improvement and i am wondering if anyone can help? I am not sure how to get all the statistics of the router but it says that
Hi, Thankf for the response. Here are the results from the btspeedtest. Hope it helps?
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 6500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1011 kbps
OK the profile is approx what it should be but as you can see the throughput is rubbish ......as I said you should see at least 6000kbps.
If you have an NTE5 main BT box (split frontplate, the lower half unscrews) plug the router into the test socket behind the frontplate, run your stats and a test on a normal speedtest site (speedio or speedtest.net or BBMax) then compare the results to those in your first post.
2 other questions : have you been switching the router on/off within 1 or 2 minutes also do you have any extension boxes wired off the main BT box ?
Hi, I have the router plugged diredtly into the main socket behind the faceplate, so all the extra sockets in my house are isolated. The readings on the other speed testers seem to give much the same reading as another. The speed does fluctuate throughout the day but it can be as low as 0.5mb/s and rarely gets over 3 which seems very slow even when allowing for busy periods?
Is it possible that i have the router set up wrong?
Thing is the Profile is OK for the sync and the SNRM isn't wildly out so with an attenuation of 18dB (you're pretty close to your local exchange...less than 1Km ?) you have a good connection.
It's either throttling by Orange (why I asked if you download a lot) or a problem between you and the exchange which is affecting throughput.
Thanks for the link. I had a read of the post and it does seem to be very similar to my problem!
Orange have given me a call today and said that although it is a easy problem to fix it will be a hard problem to find!
They have arranged for a engineer to give me a call on monday and will hopefully come and look at the problem?
Maybe i have understood the other post incorrectly but i got the impression that if it is indeed the "misaligned virtual path profile" then the engineer will not be able to diagnose and fix this?
The whole thing is so annoying! I seem to have become addicted to speedchecker sites and the fact that these site can report the speed as differing between 5mb/ps and 0.5mb/ps only makes it worse.
Providing he's a broadband engineer then he might but if things don't go too well, before he finishes, mention the virtual path profile software and ask if he could check that it's done what it should do (i.e. align the virtual profile with the actual IP Profile)
Whatever BT says it is a rare occurrence, there's only one reference on Google with or without "misaligned" and that's the thread on Kitz forum.
Hi, Just had a visit from the BT engineer who told me that there was a loose wire at the exchange which he was sure was causing my intermittent connection problems.
He connected his laptop to the main socket into the house and got readings of 7.5mb which was great. He checked this 3 times and each time was still this reading.
After he left i decided to do my own speed check and on sites such as thinkbroadband and bbmax i am only registering at 0.5mb!!! i also did the btspeedtest and that came out at 7.1mb!!!
I am so frustrated now i thought it was fixed but why are the readings on some of these sites coming out so low?
I also switched off and on the router as i thought this would improve it but no luck.
Leave the router switched on for at least 14 days and do not be tempted to re-sync it or switch it on and off. It may take 10 days or more for the connection to return to normal. This is because it is an automated process in the local exchange.
Run www.speedtester.BT.com at the same time each day and post the results in this thread. The important result is the "Actual IP throughput achieved during the test"
This is the most accurate and informative test you can make when on a BTw IPStream connection.
