Well, I've just followed all the above advice and requested my MAC. Painless so far - 5 minutes on the phone. It actually took longer filling out the online application to o2 (now Sky)!
I'll start a new thread with updates on the progress so others can gauge their success with mine, and to hopefully assist people with their transfers.
I'll keep checking in on Orange Problems regardless of my sucecss in leaving Orange as it's helped me and I'll be glad to help where I can in the future.
I've been with o2 (now Sky) since 16 September 2008 and even though they've had some bad press in the last couple of months because of the rapid influx of new customers, at their worst they are still better than Orange.
My Standard package ADSL2+ throughput speed has averaged 7031kbps and with the lowest being 6607kbps.

I've noticed the problems with the influx of new members but they clearly seem to be capable of dealing with that better than Orange have done.
In the days of dial-up only, i used to go with the cheap and cheerful small companies who were offering good service and facilities (anyone remember thefreeinternet - tfi, or UkStamp?) but they were always victims of their own success/over-enthusiasm, coupled with a poor business plan.
I've certainly got more confidence in o2 (now Sky) than Orange, and I've had mobile phone services from both over the years.

Out of interest, what was your pre-connection speed estimate from o2 (now Sky) and is your current speed an improvement over what Orange were offering you?

Pre-connection estimate was, I think, around what I'm getting because I signed up for the Standard (up to 8Mb) package.
As you probably know o2 (now Sky) test your connection to it's maximum before it settles to the package you're on then you get an email confirming you're on the right package.....or not. So I could upgrade to Premium (up to 20Mb) but I would still only see around 9 or 10Mb.
With Orange, for a long time I was syncing at 6656kbps and getting 5800kbps throughput from their normal ADSL LLU. They then decided to downgrade this to 2Mb because I was paying £17.99 per month on an historic contract which didn't "fit" into their current packages.....so after getting 2 months free......I left using the 2nd 30 days as my notice period
Thanks for all of that. I'm hoping (maybe in vain) that the 7meg estimate is due to better equipment from o2 (now Sky) rather than an overly-optimistic estimate which will then be halved, but only time will tell. I suppose I can't complain too much if it doesn't meet those high expectations as I'll be paying £7.34 instead of £19.99. So as long as I don't suffer a drop in speed I can be pretty content.
I saw the representative from o2 (now Sky) saying they'd never yet had to use the Fair Usage policy on anyone yet, so they're already well ahead of Orange on that score!
I also happen to be on one of the exchanges slated to get BT's up to 40Meg service in 2010 so with a bit of luck I may be given that option to consider too (if o2 (now Sky) buy into it).
So are you going on to o2 (now Sky)'s Access Ipstream package ?
One reason o2 (now Sky) ran into problems this year is that they don't throttle heavy downloaders and haven't implemented their FUP (they do have one but don't use it). Of course when they've only a finite Ipstream capacity this results in congestion which is why they've had to buy in additional centrals from BT which should be completed by mid-April if you believe in rumour.
o2 (now Sky) reacted too slowly to their rather obvious massive increase in popularity.

Correct, if LLU is available they don't put you on o2 (now Sky) Access.
In that case your comment :

doesn't apply (that's why I asked the Access question) because o2 (now Sky) are LLU and able to offer "up to 20Mb" currently and possibly by 2010 something faster.

I've may be computer savvy but the ins and outs of the various internet technologies are just one of those things I never seem to stop having to learn.
