I've received several letters from Orange threatening to cap me because of the amount of downloading I do. I've religiously kept any downloading to off peak hours so as not to fall foul of their Fair Usage Policy.
I've repeatedly asked Orange to confirm if a monthly download limit does indeed exist because my Broadband Max package was sold to me as "unlimited usage". Despite several letters to Orange my question still remains unanswered.
So - does anyone know if a monthly limit exists - and if so what is it??
Simple answer really, if they say theres a limit it stops people signing up, but if they use too much bandwidth it eats up too much resources and others start complaining about their connection being slow. Almost all ISPs are cagey about download limits to a greater or lesser extent. Its impossible to offer a genuine unlimited package without charging the earth and commercial * if you say there is a limit. Devil and the deep blue sea.......
Try costing a serious leased line and then do the sums if you don't believe me. You have to split a line costing several thousand pounds a month to lease a lot of ways to make money selling it at £15 a month, but a couple of dozen heavy users can eat most of its capacity.
Whilst I accept your point about costs to ISP's, there surely must be a clear definition of the use of the word "unlimited".
"Unlimited" according to a dictionary definition is "boundless, not restricted" - so to sell a product which is so advertised and then to impose what would appear to be variable restrictions must surely be subject to legal challenge!!

This has been said many times on many forums about many ISPs for many years.
No OFCOM, ISPA or Trading Standards intervention has yet occurred.
Orange have emailed me today and have confirmed that I am limited to 40gb per month download. In addition, they also apply a rule that you must not exceed an average download of 50gb over two months.
