My IP address dropped the other day.....I reset the Netgear DG834N to factory and manage to obtain the IP address....My question is: has anyone any idea what caused it? Was it caused by the modem/router, Orange.FR, or XP

Do you mean it dropped between the router and pc?

Could you explain a bit more.

If your router couldn't allocate an IP then rebooting the router usually solves it.

It dropped at the modem/router.....I had to reset it to factory conditions....I just wondered what caused it.....was it OrangeFR, the router or XP Question

Sounds like from pc to router, make sure you have the latest firmware installed in your router, the latest version firmware is 1.02.08 and can be downloaded from HERE for the DG834Nv1 if you need it, DG834Nv2 only has the one firmware, also make sure your ethernet and wireless adapters drivers are up to date.

If you get the problem again you no need to reset your router and lose your settings, shut down your router then your pc, boot the router back up first then your pc and all should be back.

I use a DG834GT which has been flawless, i have a mate who tried using the same model as yours and he had a similar problem you are having with it.

Update how you get on with a new one Very Happy

When the allocation of an IP then rebooting is not prpoerly done by the router then it itself solves the problem..
