I transferred to BT and did it by cancellation as someone at Orange told me that BT wouldn't be able to use the LLU code which I would be given. This worked out fine as, to give Orange SOME credit, they did clear the line quickly enough and the change probably took place earlier than it would have done using a MAC.
I am thinking of moving to a ISP that also has LLU,so should they accept a LLU MAC code?
Also what is the best telephone number /department to ring to obtain a MAC code?
It depends on the ISP, just because they have their own LLU system doesn't mean they will accept LLU MAC codes. For examble I don't believe Orange accept them although they do provide them. It's always best to confirm with your new ISP as it saves you a call to Orange.
Doesn't really matter which department you phone as long as it's a broadband one, you'd need to be transferred to the team who arrange the codes anyway.
BT do not require a MAC to migrate from LLU but do require that the "Marker" be removed from the line. I expect any ISP that is reselling a BT Wholesale ADSL service would face the same issue.
Note that in another thread Alien-P suggests that some ISP's offer a discount with MAC, but you could always haggle for it anyway

The marker is the LLU line itself and the system entry saying it's an LLU line. Removing that is just cancelling the broadband account a line cease and then reprovide for the new ISP.
Some backend BT system which deals with LLU lines, I don't know for sure as it's not my area, I know it's not Actuate or Eco which normally provide details of IPStream lines.
