Any further ideas? the connection now keeps randomly dropping out.
i think i need a new laptop.
So are you saying that the laptop does now connect wirelessly but you now have disconnections between the laptop and router or disconnections from the internet ?
If you're losing wireless connection between laptop and router then change the channel by at least 3 eg if on 6 move it to 2
Log on to the livebox at http://192.168.1.1 (username admin, password admin usually) click 'Security' and 'Wireless'. Change the channel in the drop down menu, then click submit.
right, sorted the connection dropping out, disabled the livebox firewall, and thats fixed it, however, ipconfig gives me, now, instead of nothing, 0.0.0.0 in ip and subnet fields
the dhcp client is started, and setup as it should be in the registery.
Is the DHCP service enabled on the livebox, dont know if disabling the firewall would also disable this?
Log into the livebox as previously suggested go to configuration, advanced, network and check there.
I personally would not disable the firewall on the livebox, I would have it on the low setting at the very least. I would explore all channel operations.
If you want to keep the firewall diabled, make sure you have a decent software firewall on your computer.
If the DHCP service won't run with the firewall on the livebox disabled, you will need to give your computer with a static IP address and associated settings.
After another full format, a couple of driver updates, ive sort of sorted it. The problem i have now is with security.
I set the livebox security on the desktop to no security, and i can browse the web over and insecure connection quite easily and normally.
I change the desktop (in the livebox settings and in vista connection manager) to WPA only, and the laptop connects with an excellent connection, before disconnecting 10 seconds later, re-connect, then disconnect, about 10 times, before it stays disconnected. There is no option in livebox settings to define the WPA key, so i do this in the vista connection manager. Lets argue that i use the passkey as 123456. I use the same passkey in my linksys router software when connecting.
So, i change the desktop in livebox settings (the 192.168 thing), to WEP only. i change the pass in the vista connection settings again, but it says the WEP key needs to be 5 or 13 characters, so for argument sake, i use 12345. "Key index" is an option here, of number 1 2 3 or 4, so i leave it at 1.
Now, i use the 12345, connection to livebox is excellent, however the web browser doesnt detect the connection, stats "web page avaliable offline", and thats essentially it.Odd thing is, again, in the linksys pascode bit for the WEP, i can type anything at all i want here, not 12345, and it still connects to the livebox :S
So, erm, thats where im at :S
As a bit of an edit to the above, i put the WEP key (i assume thats the long one on the bottom of the l.box) into vista connection settings & the linksys laptop too, still connects to live box, but wont connect to internet.
To successfully connect with security the livebox should be in pairing mode by pressing button 1, the security type and security should match on both the livebox and the computer.
The wireless details icluding key should be listed under System Information when connected to 192.168.1.1. Also on the same page under the Network heading you can see if the DHCP service is enabled.
The default security key is what is on the bottom of the livebox and if this has not been changed, this is what you should be using. It should match what is listed at 192.168.1.1.
I find the easiest way to connect when changing wireless settings, is to change the settings on the livebox. Delete the wireless network on the computer, put the livebox into pairing mode and let the computer discover the network as a new fresh network and enter the security key (the one listed at 192.168.1.1) when prompted.
If you still have problems, when connected wireless and you cant view the internet in a command prompt, type ipconfig /all and post the results here.
they look normal, though your IP 192.168.1.2 is outside the default range on my livebox. Im wondering if it is a static address. Im assuming both your computers don't have this address?
when connected wireless is it just internet web pages you cant view and is it all? can you view 192.168.1.1 through your wireless connection? can you use e-mail? can you access websites by IP?
Does lowering the firewall setting on the livebox make any difference?
Any security software on your PC that might be blocking it?
the wireless settings on the desktop need to match those of the livebox, if you delete the network and let it re-establish itself after changing the settings on the livebox, this will be the case.
I changed the default IP in tcp/ip settings to 192.168.1.1, ipconfig shows this as the IP but still doesnt connect to the browser.
So annoying as i know im close, espically when it works with no security. Livebox firewall is set to low.
it resorts back to 0.0.0.0 if i tell it to detect the settings and DNS server automatically
also, when i view all network connections, i seem to have the '1394 connection' under the lan area, then i have an 'enabled network bridge connection' wtf is that?

If you have no ethernet cable connected then only the wireless connection is relevant. 1394 is a firewire connection for things like camcorders.
What is showing under the wireless connection when you right click it > Properties > Status > Support > Details
If your laptop is more than say 3 years old, its beginning to sound like an incompatibility on the security since it works if you turn it off. It happens, they hadn't got the protocols sorted properly on early wireless kit. Its possible theres a later driver for the wireless on your laptop which may solve the problem, you could try looking at the manufacturers website to see if theres a later one.
