Please can somebody give me some help with configuring an iphone.
I have configured my email accounts on the device using the same username and details as per my home account i.e. pop.orangehome.co.uk and smtp.orangehome.co.uk
I can send and receive emails through the iphone when at home - however - when I am out and working in central london I cannot send mail.
I can receive mail during the day when I am out without any problems - I just cannot reply to any of them !!!!
Does anybody know what smtp I should be using to be able to send emails when I am out ?
Educated guess here. At home your iphone will be using the WiFi connection at your home which means its going out on Oranges Network and it can connect to their smtp server. When you're away from home, (unless you've got a naughty unlocked iPhone) it will be using o2 (now Sky)'s network and will be blocked by firewall from connecting to Orange's server since it will be on a 'foreign' network. If it were not the case Orange would be running an open mail relay which means practically the entire civilised world would blacklist their servers as spam spewers. Its possible (but unlikely I feel) that Orange will allow authenticated SMTP connections from outside their network, in which case somewhere in the iPhones configuration there will be a 'use authentcated SMTP' or similar. If not you'll need to set up an alternate SMTP server on o2 (now Sky)'s network and swap between them depending on whether you're at home or not.

A possibly easier alternative is to use web-mail when you're away from home. Their web-mail server shouldn't be fussy.....
This might give you some clues for <a href="http://postpaymobiles.at/theside?CTY=1&CID=6761" target="o2 (now Sky)">o2 (now Sky)</a>'s settings for their SMTP server
two days ago I bought an iphone and wanted to receive my e mails from my outlook account.
No one seemed to have an answer but it is now all ok.
pop account information:
address; my e mail address
Description; my e mail address
Incoming mail server
Host name; pop.my domain name
user name; my e mail address
password ........
smtp pop.my domain name. I don't know why this worked as pop is for incoming servers.
Use SSL; off
authentication; password
Server port 110 This is the same as the outgoing server port in my outlook account.
Carphone Warehouse helped a little
Orange, well it depends on who you get on the end of the line. Try dialling 156
Apple store also helped a little but to get it working properly, I was on my own but it's ok now
