It's a long story and all the problems begin two weeks ago, basically I have an old wanadoo livebox that has wireless access and 2 ethernet ports, it has had a wireless connection for more than a year and has worked well however, there is another computer plugged in with a cable, this has worked for six months alongside and then stopped dead a fortnight ago.
The only apparent error message is a 'limited or no connectivity' bubble that appears. I viewed my networks and looked at my LAN status. The IP address changed from 192.XXXXXXX to 169.XXXXXXX - the IP address is currently on automatic configuration. When I rang the Orange phone line they gave me a manual address to enter along with DNS info and other stuff like subnet mask.
I entered the new info but firefox and IE still show a page cannot be displayed message. When I view the status of my connection it says that is actually connected but ping test results are inconclusive mainy replying with 'connection timed out'. Also, the 'packets sent/recieved' activity is zero for both from start up and the current speed is supposedly 100.0 mbps.
Sorry for big post but I'd really like to get this sorted as quick as possible and the more information the better the chance of the problem being identified. Please message for ANY info you need. Thanks.
The 169 address is confirmation that you are having connection problems. the 169.x.x.x address is coming from a Windows service called APIPA (Automatic Private IP-addressing). APIPA is a service to dynamically assign IP addresses to network clients when they can't reach the DHCP server. The livebox isnt giving you an IP address.
You are only having this problem with one PC? Does you other PC have a static address or get it from the DHCP service on the livebox?
If it should be receiving DHCP addresses have you tried:
I take it you have rebooted the livebox to try to clear it? orange support would recommend a factory reset also.
Have you tried switching ports & cables between PC's to see if it is a livebox port problem or a PC configuration problem?
Otherwise you need to set up a static address as the other PC has, if this is the case.
Right, I actually have a new wire and there is no difference to the situation. Also this problem seems to apply to one PC, the wireless still works but I not sure if the IP is static or not. Earlier today I had a bizzare turn of event where I turned on the wired PC without an ethernet cable plugged and the computer claimed to be connected at 100.0 mbps but as usual sending no packets.
Is it risky to set up a static IP address or is it reversible?
Setting up a static IP address on a private subnet (192.168.1.* in this case)is of no consequence. It isn't route able over the internet. Make sure its unique and in the routers subnet. Set the default gateway and DNS server to be the IP of the router. (192.168.1.1 unless you've changed it.)
If the computer is still claming its connected when its unplugged, it sounds like an ethernet adapter problem. Have you another computer you can try in its place ? Its a fairly straight forward job to install a new ethernet card in a PC even if its an integrated one on the main board. I've a about half a dozen lying round here.
Tried the wire on a laptop to no avail, looks to be the same problem. Is it possible that the Orange servers are dodgy? It worked for ages and then it all went at once. I suppose I could try to set up another wireless connection as I have an inventel wireless adapter spare. How can I install and connect without the Orange disk? It stops working on the first menu every time I load it up.
Orange servers won't affect your ethernet to the livebox. If there were problems with the srevers, you would still have local network access ie to your livebox and other PC but not internet access.
If you have your wireless adapter is working ie the drivers installed for it you don't need the Orange disk to set up a wireless connection:
Press button 1 on your livebox so it enters pairing mode for 10 minutes. Search for available networks, try to connect to your livebox wireless network (they all vary in name slightly). Enter the security key that is printed on the label on the bottom of your livebox when prompted. If all goes well it should connect successfully and store the settings for future use.
If you are trying to install the drivers from the disk from what I remember it sometimes have issues with flash, uninstalling flash usually cured the problems.
