Hello
I've been on Orange for ages - recently there has been a "fault" (that's what I'm told) that has resulted in BT Wholesale resetting my IP Profile (how fast they say my broadband will get into the house) to 1.5 mbps then 1.0 and as of a couple of days ago, 0.1 mbps. I know I can get up to 3 mbps on my line and have regularly had 3 up until things started going wrong.
The first time I noticed it, one bloke in particular was very helpful and sorted it out quickly - now, I keep getting shoved through to India and told that there is nothing wrong with my service, it's not a faut at their end. BT Wholesale won't speak to me so I have no idea who I should contact to get them to sort it out.
I've asked for a MAC number, to be honest I don't know if I'll get that either!
My concern is that if they don't sort it out, the IP profile problems won't be sorted when I move to the new provider (probably BT, whose website shows I can get up to 1mbps - I know that's not true and it should be 3).
Any suggestions who I should contact or what I should do?

It was a problem I'd encoutered before and subsequenty resolved when Orange Tech (in the UK) spoke directly to BT Wholesale and manually
reset the IP Profile to its maximum.
Running the speedtester has given me IP Profiles of 1500 kbps, 1000 kbps and in the last couple of days, 100 kbps
Router stats? Don't know what you mean by that. Do you mean what sort of router am I using?
Don't worry about the output power, your problem is the Noise Margin. As I hinted before, your IP profile has been lowered because of that 31.4dB. Your line is unstable for some reason, that's why the profile was lowered in stages.
If it's not already, try plugging the Netgear into the main BT linebox or if possible into the test socket (this eliminates any extension wiring that you might have and gives the "cleanest" ADSL signal) behind the lower faceplate then take these readings again and try the www.speedtester.BT.com and post all the results.
I took the front off the BT socket - it's the one the router and the telephone is plugged straight into - there was nothing behind the faceplate, I think it may be quite an old box, so I'm not surprised at that.
The upstairs extension (unused) was fed from a splitter plugged into the socket downstairs, something the guy who owned the house before us must have done.
With that unplugged, I get the following:
Bandwidth
up 448 kbps
down 4160 kbps
Lite Attenuation
up 28.5 db
down 52.0 db
Noise Margin
up 20.0 db
down 6.1 db
Which seems a bit better. Is that within acceptable thresholds and is it likely that BT will flag up the problem now and this will sort itself out within a few days?
OK, you've proved the line to the main linebox is fine, it's the extension that's been causing your problem.
A downstream 6.1dB result is exactly what you need.....spot on
If you don't need the extension upstairs then leave it disconnected and enjoy a 3+Mb connection
You could give BT a ring and ask if they would replace your old linebox with a NTE5-spec one.....they may charge but if you've had any phone problems (NOT ADSL) then they may replace for free.
nice one, thanks for the tips - I'll monitor the speed over the next 10 days or so and see if BT Wholesale put my IP Profle back to the 3mb it's supposed to be.
I don't use the extension, so I'll leave it disconnected permanently
Just a note of thanks to borednow.
I ran a speedtest this morning, I'm back up to just over 3mb now, which I'm chuffed with - I don't expect any more than that, because I don't think I am close enough to the exchange to get a faster speed.
Now I suppose the question is, should I move away from Orange? I've allegedly got a MAC on the way, am I actually going to get better service elsewhere (yes I know Orange is a load of pup, but how do they compare to anybody else when you actually have to speak to them?
Your only possibility is cable or o2 (now Sky)/Be LLU if any of them are available in your area.
To be honest if you're not a big downloader and only use the internet and email for general use then a consistent 3Mb is perfectly adequate. You would barely notice the difference on routine surfing if you had a 6Mb connection.
