I thought they would have supplied the livebox when they upgraded you. I assumed they did this, with the price you are paying. This also means you dont have use of the 2nd line. So not only are you suffering from a poor connection.
Can you identify your master socket using the following?
Your master socket will usually have a BT logo or Telecom logo on it and your extensions usually wont.
I'm going to try to identify the master socket today but last night we called and asked for a MAC code from Orange.
We actually got more info from them than we ever had from calling them before. When my other half asked for MAC code they asked why we wanted to leave he said "crap speeds" obviously. She said the speeds we were paying for were the maximum our line could support - now we know that's bull because we are paying for 8meg, our line can support 4meg but we get half a meg! After hubby told her this she proceeded to tell him - that she saw we had called before and that there had been some problems on the line and that they had reduced it to 1.5mbps to "stabilize" it and would we like her to try and fix it? lol. Hubby said no just give us our MAC code. They are going to send it in post, any ideas how long this will take... has anyone had problems not receiving this!? We are thinking of going to Sky as we have the TV pack and can get BB cheap.

So thats why they refused to do a line test, they already knew there was a fault and then to try to blame your router.
Thomas that Kitz website you directed me to is great I've been reading it all day, it certainly explains a lot.
However I can't find our master socket.. is it possible we don't have one or that previous owners changed it?
From outside i've traced where the telephone line comes in, seems to be into the loft from outside. IN the loft there is one of those BT block terminals connecting cables together. The cable then comes out the loft hatch and down the staircase to the bottom landing where there is a socket with a "T" symbol on the outside. I thought this must be the master socket, it does look like the lju socket on this page http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/bts...ockets.htm however I dont see a resistor on it. Anyway this is the socket that my modem/router is plugged into and has been for the 2 years (our problems didnt start until about a year ago).
There are "newish" looking generic sockets in bedrooms 1,2 and 3 and also in the living room which all seems to be extensions running off this master socket... wondering whether it would make a difference to remove these? I dont need phone sockets in the bedrooms so would just need to leave one in the living room for Sky and the master in the hall would be good... any thoughts? Cheers
Sorry everyone for going slightly off topic but I am learning so much thanks to the forum!
Well never really got any further with the master socket thing, and we are still waiting after 6 days for our MAC code, I wonder if they will ever send it??
However notice over the last few days our downloads were completing faster! Just did a speed test now and getting 2.9Mbps now! (normally not even 1.5!!) I wonder if they have fixed our supposed problem!?

We have seen that before - you go to leave and somehow the speeds suddenly increase. I wonder how they do it?
I have noticed a gradual deterioration of download speeds over the past 3 or 4 weeks. I currently avareage between 420 amd 820kbps. It is nearly always at the low end of that range. What I find most unreasonable though is that Orange consider anything over 400kbps to be normal and adequate for an upto 8Mbps service. Grief it is only just faster than dial up.
I am supposed to be an upto 8Mb customer. I am aware my line will only carry 6.5MB. but I am sure you will agree that even as high as 820kbps it is appallingly slow. I am also getting disconnected more and more frequently over the past few days. I have a livebox. I dread having to ring customer services. Those poor people can't think for themselves and have no ability to use their own initiative. They have to rely on prompts to get to the route of the problem and it takes forever. I don't mind admitting I rapidly lose my patience. I go through the script before I call and swap filters round, plug in to master sockets and the dim wits still ask me to do it again when I call, despite me trying to explian until I am blue in the face that I have already done it.
The level of Customer service is extremely low.
After numerous e-mails back and forth, Orange have only now decided to do a line test.
Prior to that they suggested that -
I check to see if the wires are plugged in properly - Well Duh!
Microsoft were at fault - Despite my asking the question of why it's Microsoft's fault, they have not answered that one.
Empty my inbox of unwanted items ... despite being aware that I use Outlook
Disable my anti virus and firewall ... well, sure I am going to welcome on in hackers and virus men. I have used the same firewall for 8 years and it has not once been a problem or interfered with speed. I have used the same Antivirus for 4 years and likewise that has never once interfered with my speed.

Anyone have any recommendations for an alternative ISP. My main criteria are having a decent speed, high quality service and it must have a Customer Service centre with staff who speak English as a first language, preferably UK based.

I am still going to leave Orange (if they ever send me the MAC code i asked for) despite getting speeds now of nearly 3 meg. I know that my line only supports 4.5 but i resent paying for up to 8 meg and getting nowhere near that. I'm going to Sky for the 5 quid a month deal i think.
Out of interest does anyone know what my upload speeds should be as they have stayed the same whereas my download speeds have trebled in the last 2 weeks.

I believe o2 (now Sky) will match all those criteria.....plus the phone call to the UK-based CS is free.
I can recommend them as I moved from Orange to o2 (now Sky) on 16 September and have had no probems whatsoever with their basic up to 8meg ADSL2+ service. I'm getting consistent 7Mb / 1.1Mb connection speeds....and no hassle....well worth the £12.50 per month

Got my MAC code through the post... the other half didn't want them to do it my email as it would have meant him sifting through his 10,000 spam emails lol!
Anyway... Sky here we come on the 23rd. Wish me luck!
