just to say that Orange seem to have fixed the problem now.
Apparently according to the website I was trying to access, there were problems with the servers based in London's docklands so there must have been thousands of websites affected - but only for Orange customers.
thank you all to every one for their contributions and the blocked access site which proved to be very useful.

Go to http://blockedsiteaccess.com and once there enter the address of the website you are having trouble with. If it works then you know Orange have blocked it.
Just rang Orange Broadband technical support (at least it's free from my Orange phone!)
Started to be told they had an issue in Cardiff (I'm in Liverpool!) Told him that was rubbish. He then offered to reset my browser settings. Told him no it doesn't work on any computers. Told him it was a national issue and eventually got through to him that there may just be a problem at Oranges end!!!
I was assured (?!) the issue would be forwarded to their technical support (funny that I thought that was who I was talking to!)

thepiratebay still blocked here. This has been since Thursday. Getting nowhere fast with customer services although they said it had been escalated to another dept.
I think there is something wrong with their DNS servers which digital spy spotted and is now sorted.
There are a few other sites I cannot access on Orange for example www.cheshire.gov.uk which only works when using a open proxy site.
No, it's not a DNS problem. I'm using OpenDNS and the websites resolve fine for me, but I can't access them. This is more likely to be a routing issue.
I've given Orange the benefit of the doubt on many occasions, but I really am starting to believe that that I'd get a better service from the monkeys in the local zoo.
Websites that don't work for you when others can access them are frequently an MTU (Maximum transmission Unit) problem. Its very likely in Oranges case because for some reason their 8Mb service uses an MTU of 1492 whereas most services and hence most non Orange routers default to an MTU of 1500. If you have a decent non Orange router, there will be a setting for changing the MTU somewhere in the configuration. If you have a cheap one, you're probably stuck with it. It isn't a problem unique to Orange, I've come across it several times on numerous ISPs. Even if it is correct you'll sometimes get the odd site that won't play, tweaking the MTU to a lower value will generally cure it.
Having said that, the cheshire.gov.uk site doesn't resolve for me. Digitalspy works fine....

Seems to have been sorted during the night. www.cheshire.gov.uk now OK. Maybe other sites are OK????
