I have Orange broadband with a Wanadoo Livebox with a wired connection to my desktop and a wireless connection to my daughters desktop (using an Inventel adaptor).
Have just got a P4 Medion laptop from my sister (who is also on Orange) that has been used on a wireless connection with a Wanadoo Livebox at her house.
I thought it would be a breeze to connect this laptop to my Livebox, but I'm having problems.
With the laptop on, I connected another Inventel adaptor I've got and the red Inventel box on the bottom right of the desktop goes yellow and on doubl-clicking on it I get a list of available connections. So I highlight my Livebox and tell it to connect.
It says it's connected and then after 10 seconds a message box pops up saying 'the connection to your access point has failed'.
The first time I tried this it asked for my WEP key so I put in the key off the livebox, ????-????-????, etc.
I rang Orange this morning and was on the phone for half an hour and the guy on the other end got more and more frustrated because nothing he suggested would work. He got me to alter all sorts of things in the Livebox configeration, but this changed nothing.
He told me eventually that I had to install the Inventel software. I explained that it's already there, but that cut no ice with him.
I've got both my Orange wireless disk but on trying to install this I can't get past the initial page where I try to select to install another pc.
The laptop is supposed to be for my daughter's birthday on Wednesday but I'll be in big trouble if I can't get it to work by then.
Orange eventually said they don't support the Inventel adaptor anymore and I can get a disk from the Orange Shop.
Thing is, I know the adaptor works and I'm guessing that the problem is either some sort of conflict, maybe with the previously installed Livebox software from my sisters or maybe I'm just doing something wrong.
My current wired and Wireless connections both work faultlessly - even after the Orange guy changed things!
Well, I haven't tested the laptop on the network cable yet, because....
I followed instructions in the post: Solved Wireless "acquiring network address" problem.
I managed to connect on the laptop wirelessly using 'no security' configeration and then also using wep. When I moved on to wep and wpa I didn't get a connection and I haven't been able to get a connection since.
Can you tell me please. Should the @ light on the Livebox stop flashing when connected to the internet, because mine is continuing to flash slowly and I've no connection, wired or wireless.
I'm connected now using my old speedtouch and the same phone cable that went to the Livebox. So the cable's ok.
Could my Livebox have chosen this moment to break? I would have thought it unlikely but stranger things have happened.
So, slow flashing @ light, could I have done something in the configeration?
Update.
I reset the Livebox and hadn't put my username and password in, hence the slow flashing @!
Ok, so I connected my desktop again now.
I've now got the original laptop problem, although now I'm not even seeing my Livebox on the laptop to connect to it! And now my daughters desktop that is also wirelessly connected, doesn't connect automatically like usual and when I tell it to connect, the connection only lasts for one minute then I lose it.
So I'm worse off than before - she will not be happy.
I've used the pairing button, but didn't really understand what I was doing. The article you've directed me to is really useful and I will try those things out tomorrow evening.
My sister has found the Medion support disk that enables a factory reset on the laptop, which is what I wanted to do before I started all this messing with the wireless connection. I don't really know the state of the pc and this will wipe everything and go back to default settings in XP.
I'll then try the Wanadoo/Orange disk and start from scratch. Hopefully with more success than today.
I did manage to get my daughters desktop to connect to the Livebox again, at first it kept dropping out every 60 seconds, but after a few goes it stuck, and worked.
I'll attack the laptop on Monday evening.
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction - here's hoping.
Thanks Keith.
Will do.
I haven't had a chance to factory reset the laptop tonite. When I do I'll follow all the advice I've been given.
Pity Orange couldn't be as helpful.
