When I was upgraded to 8meg my speed never changed. Always had that ridiculous 608kbps down speed.
Recently I noticed that my connection mode had changed from interleaved adsl to fast Adsl2+. Since then my sync speed varies every time I connect. Sometimes its 608, sometimes its 614, sometimes its 3200!
Does anyone have any idea whats going on? Have they done something in the exchange? And will I ever have a regular sync speed that actually comes anywhere close to the 8mb im paying for?
I have given up trying to phone india to find out ever since they tried to tell me that different routers have different speeds and I shouldnt worry that I have only 608 down speed. They really are a joke.
There's good and bad here, Orange have over the last few months rolled out ADSL2 accross many of its LLU exchanges which has resulted in some connections being improved. As a result your line would have been reset to "Fast" rather than "Interleave" - now, one would expect the connection speeds to vary slightly but 3200 to 608 seems a little extreme, there could be one of a number of reasons for this so in order to help try and ascertain what's going on with your connection it would help to post your line stats. To do this do the following:-
In your browser type 192.168.1.1/testinfo.html and press enter.
When prompted for a username and password type "admin" for both.
Copy & paste the 2nd part of what you see on your screen.
The problem could be indicative of a problem with Orange, but equally it could be to do with your setup as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Ive been away from home so sorry for the delay posting stats. Heres what my livebox currently says:
ADSL Top Refresh ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Interleave
Noise margin (dB) : 10.1
Attenuation (dB) : 50.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 704
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 608 608

Secondary DNS server : 193.36.79.101
First of all, sorry for late reply, had a short break this week.
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : ADSL2
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 10.9
Attenuation (dB) : 49.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 819
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 738 605
Connection Mode : ADSL2 (that's ok as far as I know its irrelevent that the "+" isn't there as this alone doesn't make any difference).
Type: "Fast" - That's fine though your earlier stats showed "interleave" which is indicative of line stability problems in other words your connection keeps dropping and that would explain the varying stats within a relitively short space of time. Your exchange will therefore lower the sync rate until the connection is stable but given that the noise margin is 10.1 which should be ok then the downstream seems rediculously low.
Attenuation - 49.0 - this would indicate that you are approx. 2.5km from your exchange (as the wiring goes) and I would have thought you should be able to acheive a steady 4 meg dowload.
Why is this then? Well first of all you need to check your wiring, making sure that all your phone extentions have microfilters first and any phones or skybox etc. plugged into the microfilters. If not then make sure they are, as this would certainly improve your connection.
If you're happy that the wiring is correct and you still have no joy then move your livebox to the "master" phone socket and establish a wireless connection (if your livebox isn't plugged into the master socket already. If connection improves then that would indicate a problem with one of your extentions or microfilters though to determine where the problem lies you may need to swap and change them to help eliminate the cause.

If still no joy get your phone provider to do a line test otherwise I guess its back to Orange. All the best.
Thanks for getting back to me.
I have done all the checks wrt the wiring. I changed the filter to a brand new one, i even put in a brand new cable from the filter to the livebox. I took off the front plate from the master socket and had it plugged in the test socket. there was no difference atall.
The plot has now thickened. Ive had no internet for 4 days. The status on the livebox says "Invalid ADSL authentication". Orange are claiming that they have just downgraded my line because it cant support 8meg, and they say the connection should come back after they reactivate the line.
Ill bet my life that it doesnt.
I have noticed though that the connection type seems to always be ADSL2 now. the livebox is syncing and staying connected but the PPP cant be established because it isnt accepting my username and password.
Hi. I had similar problems to you about a year ago (We also have similar line stats). My stats and everything else suggested I could get 4Mb. But when I reported poor speed as a problem, and after going thru all the endless Indian scripts, their fault resolution script told them to re-grade my line down to 1Mb. I had the devils own job to get Orange head office to lift the stupid cap. And guess what - for the past year my line has been consistent at 4.5Mb, even peaking at 6Mb! But alas, I'm down to 2.7Mb for the last 2 weeks, and Orange and BT say no problem can be found. Line stats remain the same, pc kit remains the same...
One point to note where you get "Invalid ADSL authentication" - I had that and found that I had to delete everything in both boxes, validate with nothing there so it failed, reboot and then type in login and password anew. Then it validated ok. Worth a try.
As other have said your stats would indicate you should get 4Mb+. But the BIG one is the very very low Attainable download rate of 819. That needs to be around 5700 for you to get 4Mb+. If I were you I would get Orange to focus on why this figure is soooo low. Its at the heart of your issue, once you log in!
I'd agree with Oldnick re the Invadid_Adsl_Authentication error as this would in theory reset your username both at your end and Orange's user database wo its worth a try. Glad you tried all the above mentioned suggestions.
Having experienced Orange's tech support I have found they are useless and I've been frustrated with their apparent lack of knowledge and understanding of the problems I've raised on behalf of a friend with them.
They would often suggest factory resetting the livebox which often doesn't help with your type of problem (though it seemed to with me on one occation) so if you haven't done this its worth a go.

Good luck and post back.
Right.....I finally got the Invalid authentication sorted out. managed to get through to UK technical support and they did something with the password and it works.
But now its back on it literally disconnects every 2 minutes. The download rate is more stable at a regular 1300kbps but by the time ive loaded one website the synchronisation goes.
They informed me that the line was definitely only reactivated yesterday so im hoping its just a training period and it sorts out. If it aint right in a week then its a non payment of direct debit job.
Can anyone explain to me why the line is more stable when I have an off the hook phone plugged into the filter??? If its on the hook the sync goes straight away??
Theres definitely no problem my end as I have taken the BT socket (we only have one) off the wall and checked every connection. Also tried new filters. So its just bizarre.
That's interesting as it is usually more likely that when the phone is off the hook that your modem can lose sync with the exchange but not so much the way you describe. Has your telephone provider confirmed that there's no fault with your line at all? Just a thought.

Yes its very strange. My provider is Orange for the home phone. They report no faults and BT said there was no faults before that.
Before Orange LLUed the line I still had the noise in the background on calls but I could put the phone on the hook and it was fine, but since then putting the phone on the hook cuts me off guaranteed.
I dont even understand how the broadband signal can leak into the voice line??? I have used loads of different filters and, like I say, we only have a master socket and thats wired perfectly. We even have the same problem when the filter is plugged into the test socket.
The noise has always been there but when I first joined wanadoo I had wonderful stable internet at 1.1meg which was what I was paying for. It never dropped connection. Thats why im convinced the problem is with oranges equipment in the exchange.
