My son's laptop, which he has been using for over a year to connect wirelessly to our Livebox (with a WEP key), recently died, so we replaced it with another (second-hand) one.
The Wifi connection works fine to some random neighbours unsecured Belkin router, but geuss what? I can't get it to connect to my Livebox.
Even when I set the Livebox to "Unsecured" it just won't connect
Anyone got any suggestions?
tried going through the channels, it connected on channel 2...Great!
Changed to WPA encryption - didn't connect. Changed it back to unsecured - didn't connect....jeez!
tried going trough the other channels....managed to get limited connection on channel 6 - then it stopped working....now it won't connect on any of the channels. and this is unsecured. Don't know what to try now...
I remember having some problems with other laptops, but changing channels etc fixed it...
So what with Orange's lack of help on Spam and now this, I'm seriously considering moving to a real ISP...
Hi.. Hope you've got it sorted by now.. But if not.. Then i'll run through a few things that could be causing issues e.t.c
I'm guessing your sons laptop is running XP?
Is this the only laptop in your house that you are trying to connect?
What i would recommend trying * runs upstairs and gets on his Desktop [ which is wireless ] *
Make sure that the encryption the laptop is using is set to WPA-TKIP or if it is set to that. Then setting it to AES. As each router connects differently the previous owner of the laptop may have required different settings than what your son requires for his laptop.
As the laptop finds the network no problem i don't think it would be due to channels.. You said 2 worked for you temporarily.. I'd go with that for now. It is definately a security conflict between the laptop & your livebox.. So nothing to do with Orange.. But don't ask them to help you fix it..
Right.. First of all..
Make sure that in Internet Properties [ found by opening internet explorer. Clicking tools then down to Internet options ] that i the connections tab you have "never dial a connection" and nothing in the rectangular box..
Then go to Start> Control Panel> Network & Internet> Network Connections>
Right click the wireless one and go down to Properties..
In the properties menu you should go to wireless networks.. The Livebox should be in the rectangular box.. Left click the Livebox so it highlights.. Then go to Properties just below the rectangular box. In the association tab. Set Authentification to WPA-PSK & Encryption to TKIP. Click ok.. Then try to connect.. If not.. Go to your Livebox settings by opening configuration.adsl in a browser window.. Then go to Configuration> Advanced> Wireless> then making sure it is set to WPA Security only.
I'll leave it there for now.. But if you still get issues reply to this and i'll try to help more.
I had the same problem, tried absolutely everything, bought a new wireless card, reinstalled Vista, installed XP, reinstalled drivers, shook a little furry stick at the router...

thanks for your suggestions guys....tried pressing button 1 at the back of the livebox and got a connection..(unsecured) I then cheanged the livebox security to WPA, added the key to the laptop wireless settings and it now connects a treat. Simple really.....when you know how!
Anyway, thanks again,
