Last week, my computer started re-booting itself while I was in themiddle of using the internet. I have run my anti-virus software and it just came up with tracking cookies, which I removed.
I went on internet this morning and now it won't even let me get on the internet. It is connected but when I double click on internet icon, it reboots. I keep getting an error box up and click send error report.
The messages I have seen come up so far are:
The system has recovered from a serious error
One of the files containing the system's Registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful.
Orange3 came up at one point on the error but not come up since.
I haven't done anything different or loaded anything onto computer.
Can anyone help me sort this out? Have I got a virus that is not being detected? Has something changed in my registry?
I have run out of ideas!
I had McAfee preloaded which came with the PC and not sure if it ever worked. I removed it when problems started last week and installed AVG Vers 8. I have AVG vers 7.5 on my 2 laptops and it works fine (one picked up a trojan and remopved it recently).

Hi Steve, thanks for the info. I'll try it and see if it works.
The only change I have made is to remove McAfee and install AVG ver 8. Nothing else has been installed that I know of.
I did look at a couple of websites last week on possibly downloading past episodes of Ugly Betty! Could there have been a bug there maybe?
I'll let you know if the bug busting download worked tomorrow.
Thanks
Sue

Are you getting Blue Screen just before it reboots??
My laptop will NOT run AVG for love nor money for some reason.. It's to do with a reg file somewhere which it disagrees with and sees as unsafe.. Try uninstalling AVG & use a different anti-virus such as Avast and see if that solves your issue.. I used to love AVG... Now i can't use it..
My computer started rebooting itself randomly last week and now every time I double click on internet explorer on my desktop or from start menu, it reboots.
I have managed to get internet via start, accessories, system tools, internet explorer (running with add-ons disabled) and it's ok.
I removed McAfee and installed AVG, ran virus check and no virus detected. I removed AVG thinking it may be causing problem but still reboots itself when click on the icon.
I now get a blue screen saying STOP and dump has been made but not sure what has happened to my computer to cause these errors.
It also comes up with computer has receovered from a serious error once it has finished the start up process, after I switch it on.
I cannot think of anything that I may have done to cause this. The printer stopped responding last week after I changed the colour cartridge and I had to restart the computer, but apart from that nothing different has been done.
Can anyone help me?
I have tried to system restore but it cannot restore from any previous date I try. Not sure now whether to restore computer to factory settings - I bought it August 2007 and have Windows XP.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
I do not get the blue blank screen thank goodness! I have run ckhdsk too!
Thanks

Hi Sue
Probably saving everything and restoring to factory settings would be quicker and less bother than trying to diagnose whats wrong, what your getting is usually summit to do with the physical memory.

Try removing all of your add ons for IE.. As you say it worked with Add ons disabled.. I would also probably say make a back up of all of your files and folders.. It seems to me... Windows is conflicting with a file somewhere.. If you say that it works with all add ons disabled.. Try removing those add ons...
1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Internet Explorer. [ Or do it in Add on Removed mode ]
2. Click the Tools button, click Manage Add-ons, and then click Enable or Disable Add-ons.
3. In the Show box, select one of the following options:
• To display a complete list of the add-ons that reside on your computer, click Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer.
• To display only those add-ons that were needed for the current webpage or a recently viewed webpage, click Add-ons currently loaded in Internet Explorer.
• To display add-ons that were pre-approved by Microsoft, your computer manufacturer, or a service provider, click Add-ons that run without requiring permission.
To disable add ons then do this
In the Show list, click Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer to display all add-ons.
Click the add-on you want to disable, and then click Disable.
Repeat step 4 for every add-on you want to disable. When you are finished, click OK.
Are you guys downloading AVG from the the internet and using the free trail? If so this is pants and won't pick certain things up, you need that McAfee back on there and get it bang up to date.
When you get McAfee on your new laptop it's usually a 30 day trail and then won't work anyway, my mums just got a top of the range laptop and insits she won't need the McAfee, I guess i'll be making a few visits then!

AVG isn't a free trial.. It's a free version.. It's the same program with a few less features.. Personally no computer should be without Three things.
AVG Free Edition
Zone Alarm
Spybot Search & Destroy.
All free and all work beautifully.. Except AVG which i can't use anymore..

I agree, as for the new free AVG 8 seems some are having problems with it its giving out a lot of false positives after running scans, especially if you use SpywareBlaster too but a fix is on its way apparently.

7.5 was the one that caused me all the agro.. I'll wait for this update to be released.. THen i might try AVG again.. I miss it dearly.. If you have about £25 to spend on security.. I'd recommend Zone Alarm all in one packagy thing.. It comes with Anti-virus too.. Was very nice.. Go with the 15 day trial before you decide though obviously.
What problem was you having with it?, ive never had any prob;ems at all with AVG until this latest release.
I'd install it no problem.. But once it was running after about 10 minutes.. My laptop would give me BSOD and reboot.. Kind of similar to this guys issue... Turning off AVG fixed it.. SO i assumed it was that.. Turns out i wasn't the only one that was having that issue..
So i suspected that it was some form of .dll file somewhere in my System32 file that AVG didn't agree with and sent it into Blue Screen..
Going into my BIOS and switching off auto restart at blue screen showed that it didn't like doing something or another can't remember what now though.. When this new update is released i'll give it a go.. See if it happens again.. If it does i'll get a shot of the BSOD error..
