I've had a freeserve PAYG emergency account for years and use some of the free webspace. I upload via WS FTP, which has worked fine for years. I have recently used this account as my broadband has been down and always keep it active anyway.
All of a sudden My FTP comes back with a "connection failed" message.
The Host name/address is "uploads.webspace.freeserve.net"
Host type is "UNIX standard."
My user id and password are then entered which are saved anyway.
Initial remote site folder is always left blank as is the account box.
The webpages are still online and can be viewed.
Orange are not interested as per normal and trying to fill their pockets via the premium rate lines.
Anyone know of the settings to upload files via FTP for these old PAYG accounts?
If I can get back in I will just delete all my webpages and files and to hell with them. Orange unlike Freeserve are just not worth the hassle anymore.
I see they're still advertising on the telly. Surely they are breaching the advertising codes when it would seem that so many people are not getting the services they have paid and are paying for.

The settings you have SHOULD work, however I was scatching my head as I also use WS-FTP and would not fully log into any of my webspace, however I found that by disabling the Firewall on the Livebox (Go to Security, Firewall and set to Low) I was able then to access my space and upload.
Not worked out yet how to allow access to the Freeserve FTP site though as it accesses others without problem.

That sounds like a blocked port to me . Have you tried forwarding the ports for it ?
Tried Port forwarding but the only way I can FTP to a Freeserve site is to disable the hardware firewall - the strange thing is that I can connect to other sites without problem - ie 1 & 1 Hosted, BT Connect etc - very strange.
I use WS_FTP too and when I changed my software firewall I could no longer connect to my web space.
Reluctant to disable the firewall I hunted round the options. I had ticked the "passive transfers" on the connection tab and this did the trick
This is what the help page says for that option in WSFTP
Check if you want the client to establish the data connection to the remote host instead of the host establishing the data connection to the local client. This is necessary for some firewall and gateway configurations and when you get failed data channel errors
