My PC hangs if I use a Speedtouch 330 to connect in place of the Livebox. It hangs (no alt, ctrl, del) the instant the connection to the internet is made. Fine upto the point of connection. If I don't connect and just leave the modem wired up and plugged in everything is fine. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling from CD, tried updated drivers. Still hangs on connect. Livebox runs fine. Done this for a while, this is a repost. Never resolved it. Tried 2 different Speedtouch 330's, both the same. I use the Speedtouch to resolve the PPP server down issue, but this hanging/freezing is a pain. HELP anyone??
so you maybe have a "bad" faulty whatever usb port on you computer which is causing to much power or something to the modem, cause the hang.
Try the modem in a different usb port
2. Driver issue (even though both lights are solid which means there is an internet connection present) uninstall driver FULLY, Control panel, add/remove progs and then remove speedtouch usb software. If not go into device manager and remove it from there, restart pc and then reinstall
3. Power issue with Modem, them modem is faulty and is causing the computer to hang, has happened to me with usb memory sticks and various other usb devices. Call Orange and say it is a faulty speedtouch " as soon as you plug it in it hangs "
other than that not sure why else it would not work, doubt it could be because of viruses and spyware but it would hurt to scan for them to see if they are messing about with the drivers.

Not quite technically right, 2 solid green lights indicated a sync'd connection. What they don't indicate is a connection that is logged or is able to log in.
Otherwise all the suggestions are good, another thing you could try is if you know someone else with broadband ask if they could try the modem for you, that way if it works it's your PC, if it doesn't then it's the modem. Nice and clear and if it was your neighbour then might only take a few minutes to test.

All previous tips, best you could try to start with.
Clean all your temp files, cookies, history etc and Defrag your hard drive before performing a clean install of your speedtouch drivers. In addition, make sure you have over 15% free disk space, otherwise your PC will run much slower than usual and will also stop the defrag from running at its best.
I could also be likely that PC slowdowns or hangups are caused by malware on your PC. Have you had your PC infected recently? If so, you could also scan your pc for any sort of malware or virus, use the appropiate software and run it with your PC started in safe mode to do so.
Thanks for all the replies. I've moved to a different usb port, and tried again through an external 'powered' usb adapter. I uninstalled the ST and then reinstalled from Elhana's link. Still the same, syncs fine but the instant the connection is made the PC locks up.
I think we have eliminated the ST330, 2 do it, and the drivers.
Clearly this is something in my PC. Everything else works fine.
Just wanted to hear if there were ways to trouble shoot along the way?
You could try booting into safe mode and see if it will do the same thing there, if it works then check what's running then and what extra is running on a normal boot.
I'd start off with anything that requires an internet connection or is related to it, shut it all down and see if it then works. Once you find a situation where it works you can backtrack to see what actual program is the cause.
Thanks Elhana. I booting into safe mode, but the usb light on the speedtouch just keeps flashing?? Tried to 'add new connection' but the option for adding a dialup connection is greyed out??

Hi
It seems like when you have been uninstalling the modem its still leaving your previous profile on ur pc try this:
Go here and download and install Revo Uninstaller its free when installed open it a window will pop up with all installed programmes highlight the modem and click the uninstall button it will launch windows uninstaller after its done ignore all prompts to reboot at that time click next on revo it will find all whats left of the modem on ur pc and ask you to select all do that and click next it will get rid of it all when done open up windows explorer at the top of the window click tools>folder options then the view tab choose show hidden files click apply>ok, then click start>search and type in Speedtouch and choose to search C drive delete whatever it finds relevant to the modem and empty your recycle bin, when done go back and do the reverse with hidden files to hide them again, close everything reboot ur pc download the latest drivers for the 330 and do a complete fresh install.

Thanks for that reply Steve. Followed your guide to the letter, but no good, still hangs my system upon connecting. I tried installing from CD in safe mode, complains of missing icon file, but them completes - but the login screen does nothing when the 'connect' button is clicked. pi**ed off with it, took all morning to get nowhere! Hey oh.

Did u make sure anything to do with the modem was deleted especially in Application data folder which only shows up when *show hidden files* is active.
its in C Drive (or main drive) > Documents and Settings > Your name (or the equivalent) > Application Data.
Its worth going to the Microsoft Update site and doing a custom scan Internet Explorer > Tools > Windows Update, choose "Custom" not "Express" and see what it comes up with.

Hi Steve. Yep I did a search to include hidden files and deleted everything that came up. I ran MS update in custom mode and the only thing that came up was WGA. I guess I'm screwed with the Speedtouch.

If its hanging also check your Firewall make sure it ain't stopping it.
Also make sure you downloaded the right drivers for your system you most likely did but its worth checking.
Its worth trying to uninstall again using revo do the above again and also check programme files folder if anything to do with Thomson Speedtouch delete reboot, that modem software is a bugger to completely get rid of.
