I finally got everything set up with Orange after numerous calls to their ever so helpful (<--- total sarcasm, that --->) helpdesk, me moving house, an abandoned LLU order (whatever that means!) ... and finally got online through a wired connection which is fantastic!
Except now I have this problem. Every two minutes or so I'm having to either disable my internet connection and reconnect to it or unplug the ethernet cable from the back of my laptop and then plug it back in again so that I can view pages on the internet.
It just won't stay connected. I spoke to the helpdesk, explained that my laptop is a couple of years old, running on XP and that this new problem is driving me nuts but...nothing.
They suggested that I take my computer to a technician which I can't really afford. Any suggestions on what I can do? I'd really appreciate the help!

Those Indians lie. there is NOTHING wrong with your PC.
You are suffering a common Orange LLU problem, but they won't admit it.
The frequent disconnection of your router has been experienced by many others, me included. the temporary remedy is to use your old speedtouch USB modem which itself takes 2 tries to get through to the PPP server (or keep rebooting the crappy livebox). Ultimately, the solution is to switch to another, quality ISP. I have now switched to BT - never a disconnection and steady speed at 6.2 mbs, compared to a the 'advertised' orange 4.2 mbs (on a good day and never friday evening)
Ditch the Orange cowboys with their bull**** Indian support team and find a decent provider!

I'm having a similar or the same problem with mine. Except mine stays connected for about 30 mins to an hour before it loses connection.
It didn't happen before, it's only recent and i've not touched the actual livebox settings recently so i'm assuming it's something to do with the PC.
Does anyone know of any timer settings that can affect LAN connections or something hacky wacky like that?
Well, I visited a technician because I wasn't getting any further with the problem. The connection kept dropping after 20 minutes - I was able to visit the 192.168.1.1 site while connected but had to unplug the cable from the back after a while and begin all over again plugging it in.
The only light that changed on the box was the one next to the @ light. That stopped flashing every so often, telling me that I didn't have a connection any more.
So, I took it to this technician who installed a WLAN card which should have fixed the problem. Lo and behold, FANTASTIC, it connects everywhere (the technicians house, my Uncle's house who also has Wireless through Talk Talk) but at my house...which is exactly where I want it to connect? No. Definitely not.
It now doesn't connect with the wire any more, never mind wirelessly and it's driving me nuts. I'm tempted to just bloody cancel with Orange and go with someone else because of all these problems...except I'm under six month contract which doesn't end until July.
