Since the v 5.10.7 Livebox update I seem to be getting a reduced spped. I'm currently getting 824kb/s down and 28.9kb/s up. According to Orange I'm on a 6.5 capable from BT ( I know distanes etc) and previously windows showed 6m now 3.5m. Livebox states 3584 down 288 up noise 6.1 attenuation 50db. Can anybody explain these and any suggestions. On Woodham Ferrers exchange.
Well you're currently on a 3 / 3.5 meg connection. The stats show there's no real room for improvement so if you could previously get 6 meg then something's gone wrong somewhere. You may want to check your wiring, etc and then get Orange to check the line.
Attenuation is related to the length of the line, higher = longer.
Margin is the level of signal coming through, higher = better but on an adaptive service (required for any speed over 2 meg) then it will naturally be targetted at 6db to gain you more speed.
I have the same problem, took me ages to get the Orange tech people " the Telly tubbies of Lah lah land" to get my system to work reasonably well when I paid for an "up to 8mb" line in Aug 2007, they managed to get this working at close to 3mb.
Since the recent "upgrade" my bandwidth is < 1mb, and I am again talking to dipsy in lah lah land again.
Detail from my live box are:-
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 26.1
Attenuation (dB) : 51.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 4192
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 1152 288
And they hope they are going to provide a TV service, I just want them to provide a reliable ADSL service.. No chance I suspect..

Malc
Well they finally fixed my ADSL service after the "upgrade" they carried out on the 22nd Feb, which reduced my bandwidth to a crawl..
I went through the usual calls to the "help desk" gaining more frustration on the way, however on Sunday I finally talked to a very nice lady, who understood that I had a reasonable knowlegde of what I was talking about (Having spent 20 years building corporate networks )
She said that she would fix the problem and phone me back, this happened on Monday, I now have an ADSL2+ service and I am happy with this...
Orange obviously have some capable people, why can they not get more of them..
