The Livebox is connected to a main PC via an ethernet cable. A laptop also works from it WIFI. I am trying to set up another computer which is not WIFI by using a USB "dongle" but for some reason it doesn't seem to be picking up the Livebox. We get to the point where you have to press the WIFI button on the Livebox and then wait for it to be picked up, but it can't find it. We are only about 5m away from the Livebox.
This system used to work well with a previous Livebox, but this time it is a newer Livebox.
I am in France, so hope someone can help as I think the procedure is the same as UK.
Could someone help with where I might be going wrong.

Were there any driver discs that came with the USB. I use a Belkin one and had to install the Belkin Wireless Monitor to be able to access the network..
What manufacture is your USB you're trying to connect?
The USB is a Sagem and no it didn't come with an installation disc. It has worked before on the same PC but with the other Livebox. Before trying to get it to work with the new Livebox I deleted everything so as to start from scratch.
The Livebox is a Thompson.
I think there is some sort of code on the USB key, I can vaguely make out some numbers, but the problem is that if I need to use this code most of it is unreadable.

Any suggestions please?
The only thing i can suggest. Use a wired connection to get that PC onto the internet. Plug in the USB device and make your way to "Device Manager". Depending on your Operating system you should find this without too many troubles. In the device manager you will see " Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Clicking the little "+" sign it will bring all your USB ports up. One of these will be your Wifi USB. If you right click this and click " Update Driver Software " and see if it finds anything.
OK so I ditched the old USB key and went to France Telecom to purchase a new dongle. I've tried to install this one too, but am still having problems.
I get to the "pairing" stage, and then when it tries to test the connection it just says that it can't do it automatically, so I try to do a "manual" pairing and it still doesn't work.
Other times it's got to the stage where it asks me for the network key, so I put in the WEP key and it doesn't accept it.
I am getting pretty fed up with this now, why won't it work.
Unless you really need a livebox for broadband phone etc, it's worth investing £40 in a bog standard adsl modem/wireless router from the likes of Belkin. They are a doddle to set up and unless you live in a cardboard terraced house, you can leave all the security off and connect as many pcs in your house as you like on an open network with whatever usb wireless dongles you have, includingthose you used with the livebox. The livebox will burn out after 18 months or so anyway, so you're just being proactive ;o)

Whoaaa... Steady there... Wouldn't have security off.. Main reason being that if you did leave it off.. And a surrounding house can connect... They can do whatever they like on your connection.. Which COULD ( depending on your neighbours ) could result in a visit from the 5-0...
Looking at the thing you've just bought.. Sounds like it's not the USB that's the problem.. I'm guessing you're on XP... And i'm guessing you also do press the '1' button on the box.. Which means it's either the settings on your Livebox which is stopping connection.. Or the computer you're trying to connect.. this can be determined one of two ways. I would recommend.. Disconnecting the ethernet cable from the computer that is plugged in with an ethernet cable.. And trying to connect that one to the Livebox wirelessly.. If it doesn't work.. Then it's your livebox.. If you successfully connect.. It's the setting on your computer.. =]
Let us know how you got on with that.. And we'll see if we can help accordingly..
To try the USb stick in the computer that is connecting via the Ethernet, do I just put it in and the computer should find it or do I need to use the CD too and install it?

Wack the CD in and install everything like you would with the other comp.. when it tells you to. Plug in the USB.. And it might ask you to restart the computer.. So do that and on startup again. You should have some life from the USB.. Such as " Wireless Networks have been found " It will usually display in your taskbar. To connect you should be able to double click the connection.. Enter any relevant security information.. And you should be connected.. If it works. Then there is a problem with the Desktop that won't connect via the USB.
In response to the only house within 100 metres..
I still wouldn't recommend leaving security off... It exposes you to possible war drivers.. War drivers drive around aimlessly with a laptop and some software which gives live feed of any wireless networks.. So if you lived near a road for example.. You could be prone to it.. If you wish to turn security off then this can be done in configuration.. =]
Let me know how you get on with connecting the wireless..
I did as you suggested and put the USB wifi into the main PC (unplugged the ethernet) and tried to install on this one.
I found exactly the same problems as on the other PC, it gets to the stage where it picks up the livebox and the dongle, but in the diagnostic page it doesn't connect. After trying this a few times, pressing the WiFi button on the livebox etc. eventually it suggests that I do a manual WiFi install through XP. At this stage it asks for a network key which I don't have, so I am unable to proceed further.

Hi Daisy.
The Network Key should be on the bottom of your Livebox.. If you have an Inventel Livebox. White Sticker underneath.. You're looking for the 'Security Code'.
If that doesn't work... Do a livebox reset.. And that code will then work.
