Should I leave the livebox switched on all the time, or is it ok for me to turn it off to save energy or when i go away etc? Will the phone still ring or will it just go to voice mail? Does anyone know how much power it actually uses?

Whilst I shouldn't think it will do it any harm, it's normal to leave routers on all the time. I don't know the precise power consumption, but I can't imagine it's much. For myself, if I'm going away fro more than a weekend I'll turn it off; otherwise it stays on.
If you do turn it off, I think I'm right in saying that the phone reverts to your normal landline number / service, as opposed to VOIP. Certainly that's what happens if your internet connection is dropped, and I believe it will still work that way if unpowered, though I haven't checked it. Obviously, if someone calls your VOIP number, they won't get through - you've no internet connection! If you're unsure and it's important to you, give it a go.

Cheers guys, orange say that if i get an update while it's turned off it will still update when i turn it on again but I'm not sure i trust that.
They're quite right; and even if you don't trust that, then you can always update manually, anyway (log in to your Livebox; configuration > update). Updates happen only about once per year, in any case.
