I'm helping with a web page accessibility problem for someone on Orange

We can't run a traceroute off the computer in question

The machine is a Macbook running OSX (Leopard I think). Running the inbuilt ping or traceroute doesn't work proeprly - in particular the traceroute just returns * * *'s ad infinitum. Pings can't reach the DNS to resolve names to IPs and won't ping by IP, either

The connection is via a livebox, wireless between the computer and the livebox

We also have a PC running Win XP. On that one the ping reaches the DNS OK, but traceroute also yields * * *'s

I've found a page http://www.cfos.de/speed/image..._pings.jpg which suggests we may need to set some livebox firewall settings to let pings and traceroute work.

Can anybody help? Are we on the right track or is there something else?

I'm helping remotely so the livebox is not in front of me.

You do know that there is a regional Orange server problem currently ?

Check out other recent posts re. problems accessing web sites

No, we don't - where would we find out - any links re these other posts? (we'll also have a look ourselves)

But still need to get ping and traceroute working

Won't your pings fail at the server if it's one of those affected ?

Or are your tests failing earlier ?

the problem is we can't actually get pings or traceroutes out, so can't check which server (or maybe "which one of oranges's servers") is the problem.

Hence the o.p.

OK, it's an Orange problem. Can't get a number of the sites in that post, either.

Still like an answer to the ping/tracert, though

You need to disable/allow traceroutes out through the livebox firewall for them to work correctly. As for pings, I'm not certain but I think the DNS servers might be set not to reply to pings.
