I have recently migrated to Sky broadband, everything running smoothly etc, until I checked my email and found out I was still getting billed for Orange broadband. I checked my account and it was still open. I sent Orange an email, and they told me that according to their records, my account was still active, and Sky needed to tell them I had migrated. My MAC has already been applied, and I have been using Sky since a week before Christmas, so I don't understand how my account can still be showing as active. I emailed Sky about this, and I also sent Orange a frank email stating when my MAC was applied, and told them to close my account (later reading in the terms and conditions i would have to do this over the phone! - i wonder why???).
I looked into it further, and found out that I would have to serve 30 days notice from when the MAC was applied, and from what I understand by this - Charges billed and/or paid in advance to the end of the next billing period shall not be pro rated or refunded but shall be used to discharge our administrative expenses arising out of the termination of your account. - it is possible to get charged for two months, (depending on the date you are usually billed) correct me if i am wrong. If your MAC code is activated on, say the 4th of the month, and you are billed from the 1st of the month, then you would pay all of that month, plus the next month as it falls within the notice period.
I hope I am right in thinking that if you cancel within your minimum contract, if the 30 days notice falls in that contract period, you won't have to pay another month at the end of the contract! - now that would be sneaky.
I really do think there should be some better legislation with regard to cancellation charges, as it only there to put people off cancelling and isn't good for the customer, and more cohesion between the ISPs so migration runs smoothly and without cost. I changed energy suppliers last year and it was cost and hassle free. So why can't broadband be the same?

Basically it's because OFCOM are toothless and therefore as useless as Orange's "customer service".

Most ISP's cancel your account once your MAC is used its the big ISP's that dont and carry on taking your money if you don't cancel, they tried it with me last year (they even took money even though my last month with Orange was free) and tried to insist i was still with them i simply put it to them that it is impossible to have 2 ISP's active on one line and to train their staff not to waste ex-customers time in trying to steal money off them, my account was closed and they said they would waive what i didnt owe them as a good will gesture yeah right .
That was in august 2006 and unfortunately they are still at it even more.
