How long have you been on 1 mb?
Were you new customer?
Have you ever been able to get more than 1 mb with them?
Any ideas why they think forcing 25% of the contract speed on us is OK?
Does anyone else know if this 1/4speed issue has ever been resolved and what the outcome was? or how long it went on for?
Kate
I started 18 months ago on 1meg. THis went down to half a meg when they LLU my line over a year ago. Ever since that my sync speed is 608kbps down and 288kbps up. It never changes and it looks like it never will. I am now capped on a speed which is a 16th of what I am paying for. Oranges answer is simply to lie and say that is all my line is capable of, but I know I would get 10 times that speed on a different ISP.
Only signed the 18 month contract a few days ago and they wont let me out of it, just offered me a month free.
They are the modern day dick turpin but dont even bother to wear a mask.
They know I wont cancel and take them to court because I cant afford to be without my connection for weeks which is almost certainly what will happen.
More importantly, can you afford to take them to court ? If you can, then use a dial up service and add that to the costs.
Yeah not to mention the costs of me calling them for several hours in the last week.
Im giving it one month, during which I will complain to ISPA every 5 days. If nothing is done I may just cancel, get another ISP on my line then cancel the direct debit to Orange and let Orange take me to the small claims court. They will lose.
Have you tried the MTU/RWIN tweak ?....but not if you're running Vista.
I had a similar problem Winter 2006 into Spring 2007....Orange were telling me I was provisioned on 6500 but all I was seeing was 600 - 1000. I tweaked the settings and I've been on 5700 - 5800 ever since......worth a try ?

After couple of weeks of joy, my line was disconnected for over a month. Once back on line my speed went down to only 2m, being "regraded" by the Orange engineer. The reason given by the engineer was that my line could only support 2m at max, otherwise the connection will always be disconnected!
Result from above link:
Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 5.5Mbps up to 8Mbps.
However, recently my line seems to be regraded down to 1m. I phoned them a month ago to fix the problem but haven't received any answer yet (by either calling them back or text from them).
I therefore asked them for MAC, but was compromised to stay for another free month. So far almost reach 1 free month but still get only 1m.
Just remember you need to examine your line stats to get an acurate picture of what sort of speed problem you have as there are several different types... sync speed, profile speed and throughput speed. Each can be down to very different causes.
As for tweaking PC settings, that can only help where it's a problem with throughput and the speed is much lower than the sync/profile speed for the connection. It will not help where the sync speed or profile speed is low to start with.
I really ought to try and write a sticky of guide for this sort of stuff at some point.

Hi Jason
Why accept the free month if your service is crap the service will still be the same only free for a short period, all Orange is interested in is keeping you as a customer not fixing your problem, take your MAC and run and go with an ISP where you get what you pay for.

stevelondon,
what really makes me think twice and reluctant to leave Orange is mainly because i'm still not really sure if i would get "much better" service and speed from others or not.
simply because currently i'm paying Orange only £5/mth and get this 1-2m connection plus free calls to international landline and Orange mobile, which i frequently use.
therefore, i'm just concerned that what if the speed with others could go up to just 4ish (for whatever technical reasons again) but having to pay double without any other freebies (ie. int'l and Orange mobile calls are billed on top).
however, based on my previous post, do you know at all if i can confirm the speed with others before signing up with them? if i can confirm with them that i can get a stable speed of 5.5m again - then wouldn't be on the fence anymore.

This is where your line stats would really help to see. They can give an indication of what the line is capable of, what maximum speed you could get and how well it's currently performing along with what network it's using.
