I've been asked to help with a former freeserve user who has been moved to Orange (via wanadoo).
Since the change to Orange (by Orange), he can only access live content on www.orange.co.uk or cached pages (ie can access www.hotmail.com but once an id+password is entered) up pops the ie "Page not found". Looked liked a DNS problem. His connection is rated as 2.2Mbs as shown be the tray system icon when conncted
So, hunting around the Orange site, I found the DNS ip addresses, added these to the TCP/IP settings of his wanadoo dial-up but no joy.
Can ping 127.0.0.1, cannot ping www.bbc.co.uk, CAN ping www.wanadoo.co.uk
Then tried refreshing the Winsock as detailed at Refresh Winosck but still nothing.
He could route around www.orange.co.uk, access his xxx.fsnet.co.uk email via the Orange web-based email pages (including dynamic content), see hotmail.com but not log-in, could not access www.gmail.com and had intermitent success with www.bbc.co.uk/news (main page ok and so stories but not everything).
It looked like a DNS problem so found the Orange DNS servers listed via the cmd, ipconfig /all as being those both listed at Orange DNS Settings as " (DNS) addresses are required, you should use 195.92.195.94 and 195.92.195.95 "
The only install disk he has is an old freeserve one. He has a Speedtouch 330 USB modem.
I'm stuck. One interesting thing to note is that though his password has 6 characters and the settings for his dial-up connection are to save this password, when-ever he tried to re-connect, the number of black circles jumps from 6 to 16 but can still connect and via Orange email.
I'm looking at a fresh install of XP for his system (filled with rubbish and could do with it) but my concern is getting his connection back up with no Orange CD.
Is there an .iso or .bin/.cue image of the Orange install CD to download or some other archive package of the installf files I can grab?
And what could be the cause of a problem that walks like DNS, looks like DNS, quakes like it's DNS but looks nothing like a duck?

Ignore that, it's a standard windows feature to obscure the length of the password, should work fine as long as it was entered correctly the first time.

A touch drastic but I can understand where you're coming from, the diagnostics you've done are pretty much spot on. There's no need for the CD, just download the driver file, zipped, from:
http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/330.asp
Though from what you've checked so far I would think it's more connection problem.
Will download the drivers for the 330 and give that a try.
With some access, I had ruled out physical connection problems as there was no evidence of drop-out. While he is unable to log-in to Hotmail, at the same time www.orange.co.uk was always viewable. It was never a case of all or nothing.
If the drivers do not work, looks like a phone call to India and getting an engineer out.
