Lately I have been getting very slow download speeds from several sites such as megaupload, sendspace and download.com (under 20kb/s). Also I have been getting very slow download rates for torrents as well (under 20kb/s). However other sites such as www.veoh.com I am constantly getting 100kb/s +. I recently upgraded to 8mb and have around 5mb most of the time. Is Orange throttling my downloads on these certain sites?
this is the result i got a few days ago when the slow downloads started happening
in all honesty you have a pretty decent download speed there, the upload could be a little better, mine is 378,most of the time, using the 8mb package i would personally be happy with that, remember it can depend on what time of night/day u go on the internet, plus various other things that effect ur speed, the top speed ur likely to get would be aroud 5 or 6mb(download) using speedtests etc, i would say unless u live right next door to your exchange, also if your using an extension lead, its always best if poss to use your mastersocket. as for torrents i would judge them with the broadband package you have as some torrents are slow anyway no matter how good ur connection is.
I seriously think that Orange is playing around with torrents though.. Even with torrents that have around 100 seeds and around 100 peers I can only connect to a few and experience slow download speeds of only 20kb/s.
Also I am using the Home max package

Yea Im convinced they are messing around with bittorrent bandwidth. Im on 2meg connection and my speeds have been varying from 45kb/s to 150kb/s for quite a few months now. I started downloading at speeds of 375kb/s when I first signed up to Orange about 5 months ago but it went steadily downhill after about a month. Im sure they are throttling people however when I emailed them they denied it and after ringing them the lady said I was not capped or anything. Its rubbish.
Orange should be concentrating on a lot more important things.
Luckily I'm geting away from Orange and switching ISPs in a week. I passed the account over to my oblivious house"mate", and then Im moving out. Thank goodness.
I've not heard about any major traffic shaping being done or anything to effect bittorrent traffic. There's only the evening connection speed limits for a bunch of high users but you should know about that if it was the case and it's just a general speed limit.
Thanks for the replies. If thats the case I think the problem with torrents lies with my router. Does anyone know how to turn off the firewall on a Netgear DG834PN? I have tried everything like port forwarding but nothing seems to work on it.
Thanks in advance

Have you forwarded the ports properly and made your PC's IP static? i used to use a PN and it worked fine with torrents go to This site choose your router then torrent client and check that yours is forwarded right usually that is the cause of slow torrents if its not right, and make sure your toreent client is set to encrypt.
And Here to configure your pc to a static IP if you havn't already done it
Good luck

You need to make ur pc 's IP address static for the port forwarding with torrents to work properly. The second link is an excellent guide made easy.
After you have done both you should have a test button in ur torrent client to make sure its configured right.

What difference will it make if it becomes a static IP address?
With port forwarding unexpected traffic received on a particular port is forwarded to the address specified. If you turn off your PC and when it comes back it gets a different address dynamically from the router then all the work you did port forwarding is undone and it simply goes nowhere.
With a static address any forwarding rules set up will always work so data always goes to the right place. Most of the techie people either use static addresses or DHCP reservation on the router so it always gives your devices the same address everytime they connect.
