It's clear now that "leave copy on server" was not the cause of my problem and was a red herring. I've always found "leave copy on server" is fine: I set one of my machines, my "master machine", not to leave a copy on the server, and that contains my pukka complete set of email. My other machines are set to "leave copy on server" and they will download anything that has not yet been downloaded to the master. From time to time I copy the complete OEx database from the master to one of the other machines, and more often I just drag Inbox and Sent Items across, so the other machine can at least see most of what is on the master machine, and also as a back-up (which was recently very useful when I had the hard disk fail on the master).
My problem was purely due to not understanding how Orange deal with multiple identities with a different i.d. before the "@", and as lesking says, it will need some trial and error to find out exactly how that behaves.
And BTW, I don't really agree with all this knocking of Orange/Freeserve. On the whole, it works pretty well, and it's free, except that you have to retrieve your account occasionally if you don't access the site with the ISP's dial-up. There are a whole lot worse "legacy" ISPs around - like Onetel for example which has been a disaster since Carphone Warehouse took over. I haven't been able to get through to the Onetel servers now for a whole week. Fortunately, hardly anyone uses Onetel to contact me any more.
