I have a livebox and it is connected to the internet, however, when I bring up internet explorer, it comes up with and error saying that I am not connected to the internet.

Well, there are lots of things which could be causing this. The first thing to check is your internet connection settings. Go to Control panel > Internet options, and select the Connections tab. Check that "never dial a connection" is selected; if you're only intending to connect using the Livebox you also won't need anything under "dial up and virtual private network settings". Click on LAN settings and check that "use a proxy server, etc." isn't selected.
