The money is not taken on a DD. it is a recaring credit card charge. I have sent a recorded letter to Orange, sent two emails which recieved automated reply's (refering me to the Orange web page) and I have phoned on a HATED 0870 number.
I think the call was routed to India as it was an Indian who said the account would be cancelled in 48 hours.....also he said to ring back to make sure
I told him to phone me and confirm it was cancelled..........I wont hold my breath on that one.....
Also asked for a reference number but he said there wasn't one, he said it had been logged but all I could get was his name.
Anyway as I am supposed to give 30 days notice I will let the next payment go through then I will contact the credit card company and tell them to stop any more payment........think thats about all I can do.
This is very easy to solve -
Ring your bank, tell them you have lost your card and they will cancel it immediately and send you a new one very soon.
Chop your existing card up straight away as it will be un-useable anyway.
Orange then cannot take your money anymore.
Any other standing orders you paid by the old card you will have to update the companies with your new card number so they may continue.
So I don't believe a bank will re-instate a DD without a mandate being signed.
Trust me on this..they can..even if they may not. If you have signed a contract staing that you will pay for a broadband (or any other) service for a period of time then the service provider is legally able to re-instate a cancelled direct debit at any time during that contract. That is legal fact/ They may not do it, but they can.

Once you cancel a DD thats it they cannot take anymore money out if they could companys will carry on taking money out of your account for as long as they want,
In any case usually you dont sign anything to set up DD's with a company.

Not using the existing direct debit, no - once it's cancelled, it's cancelled. Perhaps I should have been a bit clearer on this. Orange (or any other company) can legally set up another direct debit without any say so from you providing you are still in contract. I have double checked this with Natwest this morning who confirmed that this is the case. I have also had it happen to me before (not with Orange), where I cancelled a direct debit by mistake, the following month it was back again (in my online banking list of DD's it was right underneath the cancelled one) and I had done nothing to instigate this.
Fortunately it is extermely rare for this to be done, but if anyone out there still doubts that this can be done then feel free to check with your own bank.

Well just had a call from a lady at Orange saying my account is now closed and they will refund me a couple of quid
Dosnt look like a 30 day notice is required .....on reflection my migration went quite smothly as I never had any real probs probably as I knew what to do due to this site.
