I must admit that my first month with Orange was a nightmare - I was told I could get a 4.5 mb/s connection, but 1 mb/s max was what I received. I fixed a "faulty" Livebox myself (by way of reinstalling the firmware through the ethernet cable), having another one sent out to me even though I told the delivery contact from Orange when he called up that I would no longer be needing one (the script for the Indian call centres needs to be changed to reflect that some problems can be solved be reinstalling the firmware).
I spent £33 on phone calls to try and get the speed up, only eventually to be told four weeks after activation that my line was only capable of 1 mb/s (1152 sync on the stats). I immediately told them that I wanted to leave as they had sold me a lie, and that I worried they were capping me. Promised calls back on the phone never materialised. I contacted Customer Services, and they offered me four months of free internet, a refund on the telephone calls, and a transfer to the 2 mb/s service (whilst letting me keep my Livebox to use as a wireless router). I accepted, letting them know that I was serious about leaving if there was one more major problem.
Since then I have had the 2 mb/s activated, the Livebox registered for it. I spoke to a wonderful girl from the call centre who was easily the most helpful person I've come across so far, and she assured me that my speed would go up (with me assuring her that my line was only capable of 1 mb/s). Freeola confirms this :

I got up yesterday morning and saw that my speed was around the 1925 kb/s mark, and my detailed line stats the following:
ADSL Top Refresh ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Interleave
Noise margin (dB) : 5.9
Attenuation (dB) : 51.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 7296
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 6528 448
I do find it odd, as I'm sure you do, that the 8mb/s service was slower for me than the 2 mb/s one (with the line seemingly capped - 1152, as mentioned earlier).
My main point is that I do appreciate that Orange have finally got themselves together for me, and that the speed and connection have been stable (my IP profile is actually now 4000 kb/s). I hope others keep fighting (and that your experience gets a bit rosier - it can happen). I recommend trying to fix problems through their Customer Services, as opposed to the Livebox line, but you never know, you might get that nice Indian girl instead if you go for 1541 (a little in-joke for the frustrated many).
