I know there have been a few topics about websites not loading, but mine seems a bit different, so have started a new topic.
Basically, at certain times, websites stop loading. E.g I have 4 sites open in firefox (also happens in IE7), and ill be browsing around. Suddenly it stops loading. I go to another site i have open, same story there, and so on. There are then "site not respondeding" type msgs if I let the request time out. It usually lasts about 15 secs or so, then everything is fine again for x amount of time before it does it again. Although sometimes it does it a couple of times, then is fine for the rest of the session. At one time it did this, I fired up World of Warcraft, which ran fine, so Im guessing its a site access problem. Im just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. It started a few weeks ago. Before that I just had the usual Orange problems lol.
Thanks, I have, although Ive yet to find a way to set the RWIN in windows Vista, as I read the the tcp program wont work on vista apparently.
I think ill leave it for awhile, i would have thought if it was an mtu problem, it would do it all the time? Today it has only started acting up now, and we know what Orange is like peak times. Both sessions earlier today it was flawless. Ill mull it over some more I think
Thinking about leaving Orange so not too bothered, but will be if it carrys on.
Just wanted to add that my connection has been fine for 2 days, then this morning, back to the delays with the websites again. I havnt changed anything, it just comes and goes.
Added at 5:14pm: After being irritated with this for most of the day, I tried changing my routers mtu to the optimal one for a 2meg connection and it seems like it has helped allot. Ive had far less "server not found" msgs and refresh button clicking. Also browsing is much faster in general I hope this isnt just a blip lol. I did another speedtest and my download and upload speeds are roughly the same, so looks like its the dns/looking up stuff which has improved.
I'm based in the middle of rural Essex, and I've met the same issue as the rest of you.
As I do a lot with computers daily, I have set about tracking the issue, and it would seem that Orange's DNS servers are taking far too long to respond to queries.
Sometimes looking up the DNS for smtp.orangehome.co.uk takes 5 seconds after connecting, and the round trip time is about 10 seconds.
On a "normal" connection I would expect ~20/30ms responses from the DNS servers.
Yes Im seeing that too. Ive now been on a few times since my above tweaks and its back to normal with the pauses
Ive reverted mtu settings back to 1500 defaults and sometimes get the same result. It all seems down to chance with how I connect to the exchange. This session its perfect, the one before, terrible. Theres no pattern to it other than just keep trying for a better connection
Its only affecting site access still, but thats just not good enough when thats what I want to do. Im going to look around for a better alternative to Orange, because this is abysmal.
Thanks for the recomendations. Its hard to find somewhere that offers what I want for not much more than Im paying now Ive heard good things about Be, but they say they cant reach my area yet. I think it will be a case of staying put and hoping things improve until I can find somewhere that offers what Im getting (on a good day) from Orange.
Well the pauses didnt stay away for long, its as bad as ever but I can tolerate it now, I asked for my MAC code the other day so hopefully I can get some proper service elsewhere
I changed ISP and am very relieved that things are much better now. I thought they would be, but there was always a little doubt in my mind until I experienced it lol.
My connection has been up for more than a week! unheard of with Orange! Im almost at the stage where I can forget about my Broadband connection now, which is as it should be.
I am off work this week, and today browsing is dead slow, also failing to open website.
Tested upload speed usig five.tv/gadgetshow and was getting 1900> Kbps.
