Hi guys don't know if this problem has already been answered or if I'm on completely the wrong track. I've trawled the forums but haven't yet come up with an answer.
We got our live box at the start of the year. My laptop (using XP) conected wirelessly without a problem.
My girlfriend recently got a new laptop with Vista and can I get the bloody thing to connect wirelessly? can I b*****ks. It connects fine via the cable so at the moment when ever she wants to work online shes banished to the spare room (so its not all bad me but still not ideal).
We must have spent about 5 hours talking to Orange tech support and after all that the best they could come up with was " Go back to the manufacturer" - thanks Orange, nice cop out.
I can get it to conect if i turn the security completely off but don't really want to do this.
i don't really know what I'm doing but I'm just wondering what impact WEP and WAP might have. My XP machine is conected using WEP and the WEP key from the back of the livebox.
Everything I've read re: Vista says that I need to set the Livebox to WAP only. I don't have a WAP key code (should I have?) and setting to WAP only prevents both our machines connecting the livebox.
Basically I haven't a clue what to do. I've followed every instruction on the Orange website and from their tech support but to no avail. So if any one has any suggestions I would be very grateful. Many Thanks
Hi, Are you sure your not getting WAP mixed up with WPA?? because there is WPA settings on the livebox. Im not too good on wireless myself as I dont use it.
Follow the guide on the link, but try "WEP or WPA security" setting to see whether both laptops can see the Livebox on the wireless connections at the same time (try the other security settings aswell), and g othrough the channel number settings aswell.
The WEP key is used for WEP and WPA security passphrases, so is the same. 5 hours worth of calls would have me thinking everything would be exhausted from a Tech agent POV. But not knowing exactly what you've been through, I'd possibly throw in a suggestion as a last resort about changing the WEP key in the Livebox settings page to something shorter or more memorable (minimum 10 characters) remembering to revert back to the orginal WEP key if still no joy on that department.
I have my XP Laptop connected via wireless (WPA) to the Livebox using the key on the bottom of the Box and a friend connects using Vista (WPA) and it connects no problem.
I have the box set to WPA only.
Like already mentioned the key Orange provide can be used for both WEP & WPA
Hi, thanks for your suggestions and sorry my first post was a bit ranty and short on detail but I was at the end of my tether. I've played around abit and the state i've got to now is this:
The Vista machine can now see the livebox wirelessly but can not connect.
In the Select Network box I can see the Livebox, detail say security enabled network and signal strength is full. I click connect and almost instantly it comes up with "Windows can not connect to Livebox" because the wireless network key is not correct. I view the network security settings and have been through every single security type and encryption type conbination but to no avail.
One thing I've noticed is that the Securty Key i enter keeps resetting itself so the next time I go back in to Security Settings the code doesn't match the one i last entered.
I've tried setting both machines to WEP. Again the XP machine connects fine straight away, but then the vista machine, although it can still the live box this time say "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network". no matter how many times I enter the security key it never seems to be saved.
I've tried different channels on the livebox but that made no difference either.

Forget the securtiy/encryption type settings, Vista should pickup those details automatically but usually you want WPA-PSK and TKIP set.

If you mean it seems to change to a shorter looking key then this is a normal feature of windows and can be ignored, it just means a ket has been set for that connection.
How have you been entering the key? The best thing to do would be go into the livebox settings where you changed the channel and actually copy the key direct, then you can be sure you've got it right as the error suggests that's the cause.

Vista automatically picked it up as using WPA security then.
You did press the 1 button on the livebox so the antenna light is flashing before trying to connect? Generally though Vista is probably right about the key being the problem.
Im having the same trouble at the moment with my new Acer laptop but still having no success. As it is for me at the moment my desktop is wired to my livebox and i also hav 2 other laptops connected to it wirelessly (rest of the family) Will me pressing 1 on the livebox ess up the connectins that these already have?
Please let me know about this asap
Thanks in advanced!

EDIT: ok i have just tried the whole pressing 1 and tried to connect again but it still not having it... anything you can offer?

Yeah, pressing 1 shouldn't effect existing wireless connections already setup with the livebox.
Are you using XP or Vista, if it's Vista try the diagnose option to see what it thinks could be the problem.
Are you sure the key was right? Best to use a wired connection first so you're near the box, and can copy the key directly so you know it's then right.
ok what i done was different, i set the livebox to be WEP only rather than WPA, i also disabled the Firewall on the laptop, connected after entering the key twice. once connected u can then turn the firewall back on. the firewall will then change its settings to allow the wireless.
